BREAKING: Saudi Aramco has cancelled all of its September European crude oil allocations and is scrapping every cargo slated for late-September loading onward, with a European lifter saying no Saudi oil cargoes at all until November, per initial reports citing oil trading firm Onyx and market sources.

That takes the world's largest exporter out of the European market for the rest of September and all of October, a de facto force majeure on Saudi crude to Europe from the 3rd largest energy producer in the world.

I spent 30 years in academia. Here are my observations about my students. Toward the end, I was teaching “Gen Z." These students combined ignorance with strident moral certainty. They seemed to have had no general education at all, and lacked the most basic knowledge of history, even recent history. They were immature and emotionally fragile.
Many could not handle criticism, no matter how sugar coated. It took very little to reduce them to tears – or to send them into a fit of narcissistic rage. They were shockingly bereft of intellectual curiosity, and many gave the impression of having no internal life at all.

Die Probleme der deutschen Autoindustrie haben auch mit der Mentalität der Manager zu tun. Zwei Aspekte:

1. Gründer grosser Unternehmer waren in DE oft Naturwissenschaftler und Techniker (Bayer, Siemens, Bosch, Benz, Linde, Zeiss, usw.). Heute haben Topmanager oft einen Hintergrund in Controlling und Marketing. Produktentwicklung wird als Kostenfaktor gesehen und nicht als Kern des Unternehmens, die Zielfokussierung orientiert sich an Quartalszahlen statt Langfristzielen. Auf Dauer sind technisch denkende Unternehmensleiter wie Elon Musk (Tesla / SpaceX), Wang Chuanfu (BYD), Li Shufu (Geely / Volvo), Lei Jun (Xiaomi), etc. überlegen.

2. Karriere wird in deutschen Konzernen durch Powerpoint-Präsentationen in Management-Meetings gemacht. Kompetente Techniker, Naturwissenschaftler, Ingenieure usw. tun sich in diesem Umfeld oft schwer in Konkurrenz zu Marketingleuten und schlichten Blendern. In Unternehmen wie Amazon, Tesla, SpaceX und den chinesischen Autoherstellern gibt es teils eine Anti-Powerpoint-Kultur. Bei Amazon gibt es z.B. die berühmte Memo-Methode, welche von Meetingteilnehmern mehr sachorientierte Kompetenz erfordert statt oberflächliches PPT-Blendwerk.

I realized too late in my career that we all need to learn sales, irrespective of our profession or vocation.

In 2019, after more than a decade of what would be normally called a successful career track (pedigree, logos, scale, $$$), I went back to the drawing board and started self-training myself in sales (& marketing too) from scratch.

I can vouch that every point in this top @hackernews post on “How to do sales?” is true, and amazingly distilled to its simplest essence.

So much so that I have printed it out, kept it on my desk, to be reviewed each day.

Btw, it’s a real travesty that top universities and early-career jobs hardly provide any practical sales skills or training to young talent. I have seen this both in the US and India, and it’s a major gap in our learning systems.
