I reviewed an a new anthology on the antifascism of the Swedish-speaking minority in Finland 1920-1950 in the latest Ny Tid, the old Swedish language newspaper of the Finnish Communist party (or strictly speaking the SKDL). A lot of interesting stuff on minorities and antifascism
Today, NATO will be awarded the International Peace of Westphalia Prize. The jury is 11 men, including Friedrich Merz and the literal Prince of Prussia and Head of the House of Hohenzollern.

I oppose the death penalty in general. I also generally think that if the state fails to exact its ultimate retribution upon you, it is obligated to let you go. You had your chance guys, there is no third try.
British television now actively prepares the public to stomach a situation in which NATO is at a hot war with Russia using second-hand former politicians.
@pkgandakin I don’t think you’re entirely wrong, it would be an event of enormous significance in Europe. But to say ”someone willing to stand up to Trump for the first time” in some general global sense seems obviously incorrect.
Italian Prosecutors to continue investigation into Ustica disaster of 1980 in which 81 people died when Itavia DC-9 crashed, presumably after being hit by missile fired by a military jet, following decision of French government to cooperate with inquiries.

This is one of the few times I think Norm is off the mark. His justified moral outrage has led to some confusion. Genocides usually take place amidst wars. It's quite unusual that they take place outside of them.
Arno Mayer convincingly argues that the Nazi Holocaust arose out of the failure of the Nazi military campaign against the USSR. The inability to defeat Soviet power led the Nazi regime to take out its rage on the Jews, who "embodied" Bolshevism in the Nazi imagination.
Essentially this same logic is at work in the Gaza Genocide. Israel's inability to decisively defeat Hamas and the lack of mass expulsion meant that the war strategy necessarily became eliminating the lifeblood of Hamas - the Palestinian ppl of Gaza. Norm frames Hamas casualties as byproducts of the slaughter of civilians. Rather, the slaughter of civilians is exactly how Israel sought to defeat Hamas. This logic underlies all efforts to destroy the fabric of Gazan society. It's an ultra radicalized form of counter insurgency.
Jean-Luc Mélenchon is polling *far* better than in 2022: even though he eventually scored 22% his polling was in the low teens until three weeks before the election, and never reached this high.
