The Butcher of Darfur speaking, in English, not to Sudanese but the Intl Comm arguing that the unconstitutional coup was necessary to save Sudan's democratic path and is now asking for support for the undemocratic deal his brother wrote to avoid coming US sanctions. Unbelievable!
Armed Arab militias continue to terrorize much of North #Darfur, killing, raping, and looting farms—and creating a large, desperate population of newly displaced persons, fleeing to camps like Abu Shouk and Zamzam. The update below derives from eyewitness accounts.
Nothing could be clearer than the evidence that Arab militia forces/“Janjaweed” see al-#Burhan’s military coup—and the accompanying shutdown in #Sudan's Internet/telecommunication access—as an opportunity to continue their brutal assault on the people of #Darfur with impunity.
⚠️ Update: Internet remains largely disrupted in #Sudan for a 20th day, targeting the basic rights of free assembly and expression as pro-democracy campaigners lead protests against the military council installed after last month's coup #Nov13March

🇸🇩 #Sudan: Ahead of protests planned for tomorrow, we call on military leaders to ensure that the Sudanese people’s rights to freedom of expression and peaceful assembly are fully respected. All necessary steps must be taken to prevent further bloodshed: https://t.co/LlZajwzNo3
“Expressions of concern” are of little use in pressuring the junta leaders. A tough, effective UN special envoy is needed—and as are targeted pressures on al-#Burhan and other coup leaders. Also needed: highlighting/condemnation of atrocity crimes the coup has enabled in #Darfur
This new account of widespread ethnic violence in North #Darfur again comes from a highly informed and completely reliable witness. The armed Arab militias in the region see the coup as a license to resume attacks on non-Arab farmers without fear their crimes will be communicated
Sudan’s October 25 coup highlights the corrupt incentives of the country’s military and security services. For urgent recommendations to counter entrenched kleptocracy, address Sudan’s political crisis, and revitalize the transition to civilian rule, read: https://t.co/R9txy491hJ
There's already far too much Sudanese blood spilled by al-Burhan, Hemeti, & security forces. But bloodshed will only strengthen the resolve of people who now refuse to accept further military tyranny in their country. All possible pressure should be exerted by the int'l community
As the parties and diplomats look to exit the current standoff, it would be a mistake to cut a deal that the street is not also apart of. Hard to imagine a deal among foreign and domestic elites holding long in the face of widespread, popular anger. https://t.co/GcGPoSWafU
I am receiving disturbing reports from #Sudan of an escalating campaign by the military of unlawful arrests, killings & injuries of #prodemocracy protesters, amid internet shutdowns. I reiterate calls for an immediate restrain of the use of disproportionate force & violence.
No one should underestimate the number of Sudanese lives al-#Burhan, #Hemeti, & other junta leaders are willing to sacrifice in an increasingly desperate effort to maintain complete power in #Sudan. The death toll from demonstrations to take place Saturday will likely be horrific
(Associated Press, 12:30 EST, Oct 25): Security forces opened fire on some of the crowds, and three protesters were killed, according to the Sudan Doctors’ Committee, which said 80 people were wounded.”

While important, the decision is still subject to a Sovereign Council vote, which has no timing and the outcome of which is still in question. Now is the time to see the public rally in support of this move. https://t.co/1TQfis6xjY
!!! For so long, former President Bashir sent militias to rampage through Darfur and commit genocide with impunity. He arguably committed genocide in South Sudan and Nuba Mountains as well. Finally, he will go on trial for those he slaughtered and raped. Good for Sudan!
More information coming from #Zamzam IDP camp, North #Darfur: Janjaweed militia attacking farming villages, raping girls and women, displacing many to Zamzam (see photos). To date, there has been no response from local, regional, or national authorities. The genocide continues…
