I wish there was someone writing an article on the recent biotech / healthcare acquisitions taking place in Big Pharma β Merck + Cidara, Pfizer + Metsera, J&J + Halda, and now Abbott + Exact Sciences. Need to read a longform deep dive on these bets.
One of the coolest parts of my job (and the aspect that I am most grateful for) is that I get to marry the clinical / scientific standpoint with the business / market positioning. The flexibility that comes with it feels quite rare & special. I get to have my cake & eat it, too!

Fantastic article, an absolute rollercoaster, and probably the best thing I've read this week. There is so much pharmaceutical "heritage" and Alex's narration makes it akin to reading about the metaphorical rise and decline of an empire.

People often say biotech never had its own "Bell Labs," but it actually did: the Novartis Institutes for Biomedical Research.
My new piece about what made NIBR special, why it succeeded, and why pharma eventually turned away from its own breakthrough:
It's a vicious cycle with needs not being met for either party. In an ideal world, there'd be more observerships, internships, networking events, lab/factory tours, & case study comps for grads to understand what the industry involves & for professionals to bet on early talent

As a middle child of academia (Masters grad) who was looking for a "core pharma opening" ~2 years ago, it's strange to witness new grads apply for industry roles, (rightly) maximising their work ex, & then see the corp lens of *relevant* work ex being at odds with that effort.

Based on cursory LinkedIn scrolling, dept switches are common, with a median time of 5-8 years. A higher number of industry-academia collabs at undergrad+masters level may help to set expectations, but there'll be the logistics of resource allocation & data handling risks.

Hi @IrlEmbIndia, your visa team in New Delhi has not responded despite repeated emails. Requesting you to expedite the visa decision as my travel for UK + Ireland is booked for late night on Jun-2/3 and I won't be able to travel unless my passport reaches Kolkata before that.
