As part of its initiative to improve crime statistics in Somalia, the Somalia National Bureau of Statistics recently concluded a 5-day peer-to-peer learning mission in Uganda.
The mission focused on exchanging experiences and knowledge relating to crime statistics systems, with a particular emphasis on Violence Against Women and Girls (VAWG). The Somali delegation included representatives from the Supreme Court, Ministry of Justice, Benadir Appeal Court, Attorney General's Office and SNBS.
The primary goal of this visit was to gain a comprehensive understanding of Uganda's systems, methodologies and practices in the collection, management and dissemination of data related to crime, VAWG & Gender-Based Violence (GBV).
During the mission, the delegation engaged with key Ugandan institutions responsible for crime and GBV statistics, including UN Women-Uganda, the SDG Secretariat at the Office of the Prime Minister, the Uganda Bureau of Statistics, the Governance and Security Programme (formerly the Justice, Law, and Order Sector - JLOS), the Uganda Police Force (UPF), the Judiciary, the Office of the Directorate of Public Prosecutions (ODPP), the Ministry of Gender, Labor and Social Development (MGLSD) as well as the UN Resident Coordinator’s Office (RCO).
This exchange provided the Somali delegation with valuable insights and best practices that can be adapted to strengthen Somalia's crime and GBV statistics systems. @SharmarkeFarah@abdirahm_omar
