The Ozoro rape festival like the Ekpan-Uvwie breast Festival all in Delta State.
We all woke up to the negative trend of the Ozoro rape festival which was both nationally and internationally condemned by all and sundry, compelling the Delta State government the make a statement as well as police acting promptly to the situation.
Some years ago, a particular feast or festival occurred in Ekpan area of Delta State almost likened to that of Ozoro.
A lot of things usually happen on that day. Women on tricycle preferredly called Keke are not safe. Young people and even children would drag women's breast to until they fall into coma. They would mount the Ekpan-NNPC link road bridge down to Ekpan junction waiting for unsuspecting women who would ply that road which is the only way to access Airport road outside the unsual express and Jakpa junction.
The moment I was told how women are being molested and harassed there at broad day light, I went there personally to see for myself how a lady was dragged down from a Keke and her breast was being dragged. My friends, including late comrade Oteri Terry and I rushed in and rescued the lady into our car with bruises all over her body.
I immediately made an open post to social media and called the then Ekpan DPO who deployed troops to the area and raided the bridge. They opened up the road. I also made a quick call to the then governor of Delta State Dr. Ifeanyi Arthur Okowa about the situation.
In less than 20 minutes, I received a call from the then Local government vice chairman late Daniel Ighedo who questioned the reason I was poking into a community matter. I clearly told him that I would ensure those arrested must be charged to court. Before I knew it, the then chairman of the local government angry about the situation, sent some youths to ensure they disband and dislodge the young persons who obviously reconvened in other areas.
I do not know how they later resolved and cancel such because I haven't heard about it for long. A lot of Ekpan indigenous people were happy about the action I took but others saw it as impuning on their sacred customs. However they saw it, it was either moderated or abolished. We must continue to speak up for the voiceless and those who lacked the capacity to protect themselves in a system with countless vultures.
I hereby urge the traditional stool of Ozoro to cancel or moderate such a custom with all clarity and urgency. Trending negatively isn't a good stuff at all, especially in a town hosting students of a reputable university. No parents want to hear that their girl child was molested. Let's help our society to help us.
Thank you, for your attention to this matter.
