As part of The Ocean Cleanup’s expansion into India, I got to spend some time there earlier this year.
I wasn’t sure what to expect, but I really fell in love with the country!

A few travel notes from a first-time visitor:
- There is a degree of chaos unlike anything I’ve experienced. Yet, paradoxically, I found there’s something strangely soothing about it. It invites you to let go of the instinct to control and systematize everything; clearly, society can function without it. The intensity also forces you to be truly present by crowding out whatever is preoccupying your mind.

- Then, the roads. You’ll regularly see trucks overtaking trucks that are overtaking a car which is already in the opposing lane because it’s avoiding a cow.

- Especially outside the biggest cities, you really stand out as a Westerner. I’ve never been asked to pose for so many selfies merely because of how I look.

- I generally found people exceptionally helpful, hardworking and very direct. As a Dutch person, I can appreciate that last part.

- India is *loud*. As someone who is sensitive to noise, I was basically wearing noise-cancelling earphones all the time.

- Yes, India has a waste problem, although in general it didn’t seem worse than what I’ve seen in the other countries we operate in. I think a city like Mumbai is a top plastic emitter mainly because of the combination of its sheer population, the monsoon and inadequate waste collection in the many informal parts of the city.

this man is being vilified but remember that without him we probably wouldn’t have any consumer AI

recap:

1>Google had internal AI for yrs but refused to release it because they’re our overlords who treated us like the idiots that we are. they were happy to throw scraps at us once in a while and then cancel those projects on a whim. they didn’t give two shits until OpenAI literally showed up and forced their hand.

2> meanwhile we couldn’t even get basic spellcheck right. spellcheck doesn't work in Chrome EVEN NOW. Grammarly built an entire business extorting fees just to make that one basic feature usable.

3> look at how Ilya is selling closed source AI to hedge funds. that was the best-case scenario for AI. it was destined for quants and algo trading because that’s where the serious money is (eg even Deepseek came out of a hedge fund)

4> then Sam casually dropped Chatgpt in 2022 and everything changed overnight. suddenly there was AI you could simply log into, ask questions and chat with. it was fucking magical.

5> OpenAI was so far ahead that nobody really came close until Anthropic in 2025/26 and even Dario came from openai (so more points for Sam tbh)

granted there’s a whole lot of profit/non-profit drama going on but the fact remains: we have consumer AI because Sam Altman decided to release it and then built an entire business around it.

NVIDIA is worth multiple trillions because of that. otherwise that leather jacket hero larp uncle would still be selling gpus to crypto miners and gamers like he always did.

Elon gave us a true EV company. Sam gave us AI. both are feuding and that’s their business but don’t lose perspective of the facts.

we have AI because of Sam.

Craziest thing I've seen in a while:

• Someone buys $4M worth of BONK

• Then posts a DAO proposal asking to transfer $20M in BONK to themselves

• Waits 7 days without anyone noticing

• Then votes "yes" with their own BONK holdings, and the proposal passes

• $20M is transferred to them

And now the Bonk team has suddenly realized they lost $20M.

This wasn't even a hack.

The proposal passed because no $BONK holders checked the governance forum.

IslandDAO is honestly one of those experiences that is hard to fully put into words.

I'm leaving Thailand with so many memories, new friends, deep conversations, crazy energy, and a whole lot of gratitude.

From demo day and feedback sessions to beach activities, dinners, BBQs, parties, 99Bar and all the random moments in between: this was easily one of the most memorable experiences I’ve had.

Massive thanks to the IslandDAO team for putting this together, and to every single builder and fren who made this so special.
