A historic and landmark milestone for the Australian Muslim community.

During his visit to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, Sheikh Shadi Alsuleiman met with the Malaysian Minister of Higher Education, Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir, and discussed the future of Islamic higher education in Australia, including the establishment of the first institute of its kind in the country.

The Australian Islamic Institute of Higher Education (AIIHE), founded by the United Muslims of Australia (UMA), also officially signed and exchanged a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM), one of the most renowned Islamic universities in the world.

The MoU was signed and exchanged between Professor Osman Bakar, Rector of IIUM, and Sheikh Shadi Alsuleiman, Founder and Chair of UMA and Director of AIIHE.

This important MoU will include cooperation between both institutions, lecturer and student exchange, support in developing the Islamic curriculum, and assistance in the establishment of AIIHE.

AIIHE aims to become the first Islamic higher education institution of its kind in Australia, pending TEQSA approval and accreditation of its courses. AIIHE is independently established and led in Australia to serve the broader Australian Muslim community through excellence in Islamic education and theology.

Through AIIHE, UMA aims to graduate home-grown Imams, religious leaders, scholars, educators and community leaders, both brothers and sisters, who are grounded in authentic Islamic knowledge and connected to the Australian context.

This project is part of UMA’s long-term vision to preserve Islamic identity for future generations, strengthen Islamic education in Australia, and prepare leaders who can serve the Muslim community and their country, Australia, with knowledge, wisdom and confidence.

By the grace of Allah, we are not far from achieving this vision, and UMA will continue working tirelessly until this dream becomes a reality.

🌟 New Hijri Year 1448! 🌟
As we welcome the beginning of the new Hijri year 1448 AH, we reflect upon the great lessons of the Hijrah (migration) of Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ). The Hijrah was a journey of faith, sacrifice, perseverance, and trust in Allah.
It reminds us that with sincere faith and patience, challenges can become opportunities for growth, renewal, and success.
The Hijri calendar begins with the month of Muharram, which is one of the four sacred months designated by Allah. Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) called it “the Month of Allah” and highly recommended fasting during its days:
“The most excellent fast after Ramadan is Allah’s month, al-Muharram…” (Sahih Muslim 1163a)

AAM and ANIC Strongly Condemn the Terrorist Attack on San Diego Mosque and Warns of Rising Threat of Islamophobia

The Alliance of Australian Muslims (AAM) and the Australian National Imams Council (ANIC) strongly condemn the horrific terrorist attack and mass shooting that recently took place at the Islamic Centre of San Diego, USA, the largest mosque in San Diego County, which has reportedly left five people dead, including members of the congregation and the suspects involved. Authorities are investigating the attack as a hate crime.

We extend our deepest condolences to the families of the victims, the Muslim community in San Diego, USA, and all those affected by this horrific act of violence. Mosques and places of worship must remain sanctuaries of peace, safety, and reflection, not targets of hatred and terror.

The Australian Muslim community remains deeply fearful and concerned about the risk of attacks targeting Muslims, mosques, Islamic schools, and community institutions. Recent threats, hate incidents, online extremism, and rising hostility have intensified these fears.

AAM and ANIC are deeply concerned that Islamophobia and anti-Muslim hatred continue to be downplayed, while hostile political narratives, irresponsible commentary, and media reporting that links Muslims with extremism help normalise suspicion and hostility, increasing the risk of real-world harm.

This attack once again brings painful memories of the Christchurch Mosque massacre in New Zealand, where innocent worshippers were brutally murdered while attending prayer by an attacker who was radicalised on Australian soil. The Australian and global Muslim community continues to live with the trauma of such attacks, and many Muslims in Australia have long expressed serious concerns about the possibility of another Islamophobic terrorist attack targeting mosques or Islamic institutions.

Words matter. Public narratives matter. When Muslims are constantly portrayed through the lens of security threats or extremism, it fuels division, emboldens hate groups, and undermines social harmony.

We call upon political leaders, media organisations, law enforcement agencies, and community leaders to take the growing threat of Islamophobia and anti-Muslim hate seriously and work collectively to ensure the safety and protection of all faith communities.

AAM and ANIC reaffirm their solidarity with the Muslim community in the USA and all communities affected by hatred, extremism, and violence.

🕋 THE MONTH OF THUL HIJJAH & DAY OF EID AL-ADHA 1447H I 2026

All praise is due to Allah the Almighty, and peace and blessings upon our Prophet Mohammad, the final messenger of Allah.

The Grand Mufti of Australia, Dr Ibrahim Abu Mohamad, and the Australian Fatwa Council are mindful of maintaining the Muslim community's unity, particularly during Islamic occasions and celebrations. Therefore, the Grand Mufti of Australia and the Australian Fatwa Council would like to take this opportunity to make the following announcement:

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, the Custodians of the two sacred cities Makkah and Madinah, where the rituals of Hajj, including Tawaf, Sa'i, and standing at Arafat, are performed, has announced that Monday, 18th May 2026, is the first day of the Month of Thul Hijjah 1447 after the Hijrah (Migration of the Prophet (Peace Be Upon Him)).

As a result, the Grand Mufti of Australia, Dr. Ibrahim Abu Mohamad, announces that:

✅ Tuesday, 26th May 2026, will be the Day of Arafah (9th of Thul Hijjah) &

✅ Wednesday, 27th of May 2026 (10th of Thul Hijjah) Will be the Day of Eid Al-Adha for the Year 1447H I 2026

The Grand Mufti of Australia, Dr. Ibrahim Abu Mohamad, the Australian Fatwa Council and the Australian National Imams Council (ANIC) take this opportunity to congratulate the entire Muslim world and the Australian Muslim community on celebrating Eid Al-Adha for the year 1447H – 2026.

The Australian National Imams Council acknowledges, understands, and respects the opinions of Imams and scholars who may hold different views. It calls upon the community to respect these differences of opinion and strive towards the greater good and unity of the Muslim community.

May 15 marks 78 years since the Nakba — when nearly a million Palestinians were violently expelled from their homes, their land seized, and over 530 towns and villages erased from the map.

This was not collateral damage. It was deliberate, systematic displacement.

Since 1948, the occupying state of Israel has never stopped. It has continued to seize what remains of Palestine — enforcing apartheid, demolishing homes, besieging communities, and denying Palestinians the right to return to land that was always theirs.

78 years later, we do not forget.

We remember the homes whose keys are still carried. The olive trees still rooted in memory. The families still living in refugee camps across Jordan, Lebanon, Syria, and Gaza — waiting.

We reflect on what was taken, and on what still could be — a free Palestine, where every Palestinian has the right to exist with dignity on their ancestral land.
