If you come to Kyoto and only visit Kinkaku-ji, Fushimi Inari, and Arashiyama,
you're seriously missing out.
Those places are beautiful. No question.
But someone I know who grew up in Kyoto
showed me a completely different side of the city.
Sanjusangendo — 1,000 Kannon statues lined up in silence.
No photos are allowed inside.
You really have to go there to feel it.
My friend says it was one of the most powerful experiences they've had in Japan.
Ninnaji Temple — founded in 888.
Quiet. Unhurried.
A five-storied pagoda and a National Treasure main hall.
There are probably very few foreign tourists here.
The Kyoto people imagine, but rarely find.
Shimogamo Shrine — a World Heritage Site that's barely promoted overseas.
Walk through Tadasu no Mori,
an ancient forest right in the city.
The quiet, authentic side of Kyoto.
And the food.
These are places I personally ate at.
Wabiya Korekido — a yakitori restaurant in Gion Hanamikoji.
Every skewer is excellent,
and the atmosphere from the entrance to the dining room is fantastic.
Moritaya — sukiyaki and shabu-shabu at JR Kyoto Isetan.
It's right next to Kyoto Station, so it's very easy to visit.
I had the sukiyaki, and it was absolutely outstanding.
Kyoto Ichinoden Honten — saikyo-yaki, Kyoto-style miso-marinated grilled fish.
I personally love it.
Highly rated by locals,
and you can enjoy the meal in a calm, traditional atmosphere.
The flavor is excellent.
Isn't this the Kyoto that many tourists still don't know?
Which place would you want to visit first?

This is incredibly cool — A source familiar with Bad Bunny’s performance tonight tells me that the couple in the halftime show got married for real.
They invited Bad Bunny to their wedding and in turn he invited them to get married during his performance.
