Breaking NEWS: After 3 years detained in inhumane conditions on Diego Garcia, the UK Government today announced, in open court, that all our clients will be offered the opportunity to come directly to the UK. This is a significant and welcome change in position. More to follow.
For far too long, Home Office has been detaining survivors of trafficking in 'immigration removal centres', causing profound & irreparable harm to them.
Last week, Labour govt said they will increase detention capacity & reopen two such centres.
Here's why it is concerning🧵1/5
It is unthinkable that vulnerable women who are survivors of gender-based violence are having to put up with such sickening behaviour

In a landmark development, the Home Office has agreed to consider the asylum claims of everyone in the cohort designated for removal to #Rwanda, prioritising their cases within the UK asylum system ▶️ https://t.co/nVIdBkX8pK

It will be argued that the accommodation is unlawfully inadequate and damaging to residents’ health. This has been compounded by woefully ineffective screening and monitoring processes which have failed to identify those for whom the site is not suitable.
We represent a brave lead claimant who is challenging the Home Secretary’s accommodation of asylum-seekers at the former RAF base at Wethersfield, Essex. After a miserable year of the site’s operation, the final trial begins in the High Court tomorrow. 1/2

Today, on the 2 year anniversary we remember the 31 people who were lost in the Channel on 24 November 2021. Their families and friends remain in our thoughts as we continue to support them in their fight for justice.
Toufique Hossain, "Today is not just a victory for our clients, but a victory for the rule of law. It's a reminder that no one is above the law. And it's timely that governments are told that they have to stay within the boundaries of the law"
Beth Rigby, "What do you think of Suella Braverman's view that we should pull out of the ECHR to get the Rwanda Policy going?"
TH, "The ECHR is one of many international conventions that make it clear that this country, and in fact this country's laws itself are clear how you should respect human rights of asylum seekers"
"A former attorney general and a lawyer herself, she should have respect for the rule of law. That is what the supreme court has held today"
Give @ToufiqueHossain a follow 👏 @DLPublicLaw
