The 16th EUMETSAT User Forum is taking place in Cotonou, Benin. Discussions include the migration to Meteosat Third Generation (MTG) and upcoming initiatives aimed at leveraging space technology for early warning in Africa.
Journey started! Underway to @EuropeanMetSoc Annual Meeting in Barcelona to enjoy latest atmospheric #science, meet colleagues, promote the new J. Eur Meteorol Society (https://t.co/ytAMQAzy2c) and open a new Harry Otten Prize round (https://t.co/UYrBVeqKxB) #traintoEMS#EMS2024
ICPAC is supporting the Sudan Meteorological Authority @EWSMA1 in hosting a technical workshop that is in collaboration with Sudan's early warning state actors. The workshop, funded through @CIMAFoundation aims to enhance technical institutional efforts in coordinating the country's national early warning systems & promote dialogue among involved agencies to advance the implementation of the Sudan Climate & Weather Rescue Plan in the country's fragile context.
🌦️ The future of #weather forecasting: Can Artificial Intelligence (AI) revolutionize it? 🤖🌍
This week at #ICPAC, we embarked on an insightful journey into the world of #weather#forecasting with the help of cutting-edge #AI technology. Our team has been collaborating with experts and engaging in intensive training sessions, exploring how Machine Learning (ML) can elevate the precision and efficiency of #weather predictions.
🌟 Highlights from the training:
🤖 Hands-on experimentation: We conducted a comprehensive evaluation and comparison of forecasting models, including the Generative Adversarial Networks (GAN) Model, and how they can be used to enhance #forecasting accuracy.
🧠 Expert insights: We were privileged to host experts from the @UniofOxford and ICPAC Climate Scientists share their expertise and experiences, enriching our understanding of AI's transformative role in #meteorology.
🤝 A special shoutout to @Google for their invaluable support in the project.
HUMANITARIAN INFO CROWDSOURCING REQUEST
SUDAN 19 APR 2023
As of today, all our staff in #Sudan (more than 300 Sudanese, 25 non-Sudanese) are accounted for, but we remain 'sheltering in place' in #Khartoum and #Darfur, where there's heavy fighting
Like all civilians, unfortunately we remain in grave danger there
In some areas less affected by armed #conflict, namely our #refugee-focused offices in #Gedaref and White #Nile states, as of yesterday we re-opened our offices for essential/limited operations
More broadly, we're beginning to prepare for scaling #emergency response where/when feasible (some obvious security and logistical challenges currently).
As the situation is chaotic and dynamic, and most #humanitarian offices in Khartoum are currently paralysed, I wanted to supplement what we know with some crowd-sourced info to build our understanding and prelim planning
So, please do DM me if you have primary info on any of the below:
- where are people #fleeing from and to specifically?
- how many people roughly are in which new #camps or collective #shelters, and where?
- where are there *already* #community-based organisations working to help people in this current tragedy (helping either/both people who've fled, but also people who are trapped)? what are their contacts? how can we help?
I can't guarantee we can act on any of the information, but we'll try our utmost
Please share this message with those who can help share this key humanitarian info
Our chair group is looking for a research assistant! Do you want a diverse job in academia supporting students and staff in their data and modelling challenges (teaching and research)? Then this might be something for you, MAQ is a very nice place to work!
