I no wan hear say dem arrest any of my guys because of tax wahala from next year oh!
Sha here’s everything you need to understand; the new tax law, and how to reduce what you pay...
➤ What changed?
The new tax regime merges Personal Income Tax (PIT) and Capital Gains Tax (CGT).
This means even profits from assets (like crypto or shares) are now taxed using the same income tax rates.
The old flat 10% CGT rate is gone.
➤ Who does this affect?
Individuals and businesses in Nigeria, including freelancers, traders, and anyone receiving money into their accounts.
So if you’re earning from crypto, remote jobs, or side gigs, you fall under this too.
➤ The new income bands (from KPMG):
₦0 – ₦800,000 ➤ 0%
₦800,001 – ₦3,000,000 ➤ 15%
₦3,000,001 – ₦12,000,000 ➤ 18%
₦12,000,001 – ₦25,000,000 ➤ 21%
₦25,000,001 – ₦50,000,000 ➤ 23%
Over ₦50,000,000 ➤ 25%
These are progressive, meaning the more you earn, the higher the tax on the extra portion you earn.
➤ Simple example:
Let’s say you earn ₦5,000,000 a year.
Your first ₦800,000 ➤ 0% tax
₦800,001 to ₦3,000,000 ➤ 15% tax
₦3,000,001 to ₦5,000,000 ➤ 18% tax
You don’t pay 18% on the full ₦5M but only on the portion that falls into that band.
So, your total tax is a mix of different rates, not one flat rate.
➤ How to reduce taxable income (legally):
Tax avoidance ≠ tax evasion.
Tax avoidance means using legal ways to pay less tax.
Ways to reduce taxable income:
➤ Claim allowable deductions (pension, NHF, health insurance)
➤ Register as a business and separate personal expenses
➤ Keep receipts and records
➤ Use tax reliefs properly
➤ How crypto will be taxed:
Profits from buying and selling crypto now fall under Capital Gains Tax rules which means they follow the same income bands above.
If you trade, your profits (not your total inflow) are taxed.
So if you receive ₦5M but only made ₦500k profit, tax applies to ₦500k — not ₦5M.
➤ How businesses are taxed:
➤ Small businesses (under ₦25M turnover) ➤ 0%
➤ Medium (₦25M–₦100M) ➤ 20%
➤ Large (above ₦100M) ➤ 30%
Companies also pay 10% withholding tax on dividends distributed to owners.
➤ Key takeaway:
Tax isn’t to punish rather it’s to formalize.
But you must understand it to avoid mistakes.
Track your inflows, file early, and learn what’s deductible.
➤ Understanding the ₦800k rule
Many people ask if tax starts from ₦800k.
Yes, because everyone gets a tax relief first: ₦200,000 or 1% of income (whichever is higher) + 20% of your income.
So, if you earn ₦800k or less per year, your relief cancels your tax, you pay ₦0.
You only start paying once you go above ₦800k.
➤ Final advice:
Avoid tax evasion because it’s illegal and punishable.
But practice tax avoidance, structure your income smartly.
As crypto grows and inflows rise, it’s better to stay compliant and informed. I’ll be keeping more of my assets in crypto and I’ll @usejurix_ to exchange my fiat to stables.
Have a wonderful week.
