The race for the Emperor's Cup at the Osaka tournament ends in favor of Kirishima Tetsuo. The 29-year-old sekiwake has certainly been the most consistent and determined fighter over these two weeks and fully deserves the third title of his career. On day 14, Kirishima failed to defeat Aonishiki (still running for kachi-koshi 7-7), but in the following bout, the yokozuna Hoshoryu's loss from the hands of the other ozeki, Kotozakura, mathematically confirmed Kirishima's victory.

Thanks to this triumph, a new promotion to the second-highest rank in the banzuke seems a reality (34 wins in the last 3 basho), a position Kirishima has already held for six basho between late 2023 and early 2024. But now the 29-year-old from Mongolia seems to have gained a new awareness of his own abilities, managing to exploit his great technique (nine different kimarite used in Osaka) without wasting too much energy. Will he be able to maintain order in his mind and in his fighting style until he takes the next step towards the white rope? Perhaps it's too early to talk about it now, and it's better to celebrate the great achievement: Kirishima, with three titles, is currently the second most successful rikishi in Makuuchi (tied with Mitakeumi) behind Onosato's five. Congratulations, Kirishima!
