For a long time, Uttar Pradesh was mostly in the news for crime and poor law and order. But if someone actually looks at the NCRB data of the last few years, the picture is not the same anymore.

UP is India’s biggest state by population with nearly 24 crore people, so naturally the total number of cases will always look high. But crime rate per lakh population gives a much clearer picture. According to NCRB data, while India’s overall crime rate was around 445 cases per lakh population, Uttar Pradesh reported around 330–335 cases per lakh population, which is significantly lower than the national average.

The NCRB data also showed that in categories like murder, robbery and dacoity, UP performed better than the national average on a per lakh population basis. This becomes even more significant when compared to the size and population pressure of the state.

No government can completely eliminate crime in a state this large, but the overall atmosphere in UP has clearly changed over the last few years. Strict action against mafias, stronger policing and better administrative control under the Yogi government have played a major role in this change.

People may have different political opinions, but compared to the image UP had a decade ago, the improvement in law and order is difficult to ignore. #apradhmuktUP
