When MTV (Music Television) launched at 12:01 AM with John Lack's famous words—"Ladies and gentlemen, rock and roll"—and footage of the Apollo 11 moon landing, nobody could have predicted how profoundly it would reshape pop culture.

Here are a few quick, fascinating highlights from MTV's legendary launch:

The Very First Video: The first music video ever broadcast on the network was The Buggles' "Video Killed the Radio Star," followed immediately by Pat Benatar's "You Better Run."

The Original VJs: The network introduced five original Video Disk Jockeys (VJs) who quickly became household names: Nina Blackwood, Mark Goodman, Alan Hunter, J.J. Jackson, and Martha Quinn.

A Regional Start: MTV wasn't initially available nationwide—it first went live on cable systems in Northern New Jersey and parts of the Midwest. Cable operators were flooded with calls from fans demanding, "I want my MTV!" after the iconic ad campaign launched in 1982.

The Visual Revolution: Before MTV, music videos were largely an afterthought or promotional clip for European television. MTV turned videos into an essential art form, launching careers, dictating fashion trends, and turning the 1980s into the ultimate visual era for rock and pop music.
