When you look at how the Recording Academy treated Michael Jackson in the 1980s and how they treat BTS today, it is the exact same blueprint of exploitation without parity:

The Ratings Trap: The Grammys have always used revolutionary icons for clout. In 1988, they practically begged Michael to perform "Man in the Mirror" and "The Way You Make Me Feel" to secure their highest television ratings in history—only to completely snub the Bad album for every single award that night. Decades later, they did the exact same thing to BTS, moving their categories to the end of the broadcast and using them for billions of social media impressions, while refusing to give them their well-deserved flowers.

The "Next Time" Ultimatum: In 1980, after the Academy shoved the masterpiece Off the Wall into a single R&B category and ignored it for Album of the Year, Michael famously said, "Next time, they won't be able to ignore me." He came back with Thriller and forced them to hand over a record-breaking 8 trophies. But artists shouldn't have to break the universe just to be treated fairly on a main stage.

The Segregation Trick: Michael had to fight against the "Urban/R&B" containment zones designed to keep Black artists away from the Pop field. The Academy creates these geographic and genre walls so their 15,000 predominantly Western voters can manage diversity without ever letting global-impact acts win the ultimate prizes like Album or Record of the Year.

Most people are terrified of the Grammys, but BTS pulling their submissions for the 2027 awards is a modern echo of Michael’s fearless spirit. They already have the stadium tours, the historic records, and a global, unbreakable fandom. They know their worth. By refusing to let the Academy use Arirang as a token diversity check or a financial lifeline for a dying broadcast, BTS proved that true prestige belongs to the artists who command the culture, not the committee holding the plastic trophies.
