Why the World Needs a Stable Somalia Now More Than Ever

In a time of growing global instability, Somalia cannot be ignored. Its vast untapped resources and strategic location make a stable Somalia essential for maritime security, energy diversification, food production, and regional peace. Stability is vital.

As of early 2026, Somalia is becoming more important to international security, trade, and economic integration. Once seen as a “failed state,” the country is gradually changing this view and positioning itself as a key partner in global affairs.

Somalia holds significant economic potential that could impact global energy and trade security. Geological surveys suggest tens of billions of barrels of oil and gas equivalents, along with valuable minerals like gold, iron ore, uranium, copper, and gypsum. Growing interest in lithium and cobalt highlights its role in the global green energy transition.

With Africa’s longest mainland coastline, over 3,300 kilometers, and fertile agricultural zones along the Shabelle and Jubba rivers, Somalia can strengthen global food systems by increasing exports of sesame, cereals, fruits, livestock, and fisheries.

Somalia’s potential energy reserves are especially important as traditional Middle Eastern suppliers face disruptions from geopolitical tensions. Responsible development of its offshore and onshore blocks could provide new, reliable supplies and help diversify global energy sources.

Unlocking this potential requires a stable and accountable government to ensure investment security, transparent resource management, fair revenue sharing, and modern infrastructure to attract responsible capital.

Geopolitical tensions heighten the urgency. Instability in key corridors like the Red Sea, Bab el-Mandeb Strait, and Strait of Hormuz, which handle nearly a quarter of global seaborne trade, forces major shipping companies to reroute around the Cape of Good Hope. This raises costs and disrupts supply chains.

A stable Somalia could ease these pressures through stronger governance, better maritime patrols, and secure ports like Berbera, Mogadishu, and Kismayo to protect shipping lanes, reduce piracy, and support regional trade.

Ultimately, a stable Somalia would benefit its people and contribute to global economic resilience, regional peace, and international security.

In a searing interview with the BBC, paediatrician Dr Tanya Haj Hassan condemned the broadcaster for echoing Israeli government talking points as she recounted her harrowing experiences in Gaza.

Dr Haj Hassan, who recently returned from volunteering with Medical Aid for Palestinians, shared the devastating story of her colleague, Dr Alaa, a paediatric emergency doctor at Nasser Hospital.

While Dr Alaa was on call at the hospital, her home was bombed and nine of her children were killed, their bodies charred and dismembered beyond recognition. Her husband remains in critical condition.

Dr Haj Hassan described a healthcare system in collapse: intensive care units overflowing with maimed, orphaned children – many the sole survivors of their families.

She also questioned why the BBC has delayed the release of 'Medics Under Fire', a documentary it commissioned about systematic attacks on Gaza’s healthcare workers, calling for its immediate release.

Dr. Abdinur explained how international partners, after over three decades and billions in funding, are increasingly fatigued with Somalia’s prolonged instability. Their willingness to continue supporting Somalia without tangible progress is wearing thin.

2) Upcoming Elections – Unrealistic Promises and Historical Parallels:
He critiqued the Federal Government’s announcement of "One Person, One Vote" elections, stressing that while the vision is commendable, the practical realities make it unattainable at present:

• Nationwide security is lacking to protect voters and candidates, particularly in terrorist-influenced regions.

• Comprehensive citizen registration remains incomplete, with Puntland and Jubbaland not fully participating.

• In the two Federal Member States that nominally accepted, large parts are still under Al-Shabaab control, directly or indirectly.

• Somaliland remains entirely outside the federal electoral process.

Dr. Abdinur sarcastically recalled how during the Kacaan regime, elections were so unfair that voters simply had to choose between a ballot box wrapped in the national flag (blue) or a yellow one, urged by the slogan "Haa buluuga, maya huruuda" ("Vote YES for the blue, NO for the yellow") — and unsurprisingly, the regime always "won" by over 99%. Without genuine reforms, he warned, Somalia risks repeating past authoritarian practices under new forms.

3) Electoral Process Flaws:
Dr. Abdinur stressed that key political stakeholders reject the current electoral framework due to:

A) The National Electoral Commission being formed unilaterally by the current administration, undermining perceptions of impartiality.
Although there is broad consensus around "One Person, One Vote" in principle, the methodology remains exclusionary, opaque, and unconstitutional.

B) Formation of a "Super Party":
He raised concerns over the establishment of a new political party aligned with the President, involving both parliamentary speakers and certain FMS leaders:

The involvement of parliamentary speakers erodes the neutrality essential for a credible electoral environment.
This is widely seen as a power-consolidation strategy, prioritizing personal and political survival over national stability.

Potential Consequences:
Dr. Abdinur warned that unless urgent corrections are made, Somalia is heading towards greater political fragmentation, internal chaos, and institutional collapse.
He called for immediate, inclusive dialogue among all Somali stakeholders, adherence to constitutional frameworks, realistic electoral preparations, and reengagement with international partners based on transparency and trust. 🇸🇴👇🏽

The fate of our future generation is at stake and in the hands of the current leadership at all levels of government after Allah SWT.

The socio-political-security condition in Somalia is in its worst shape while opportunistic foreign predators are salivating on our coast looking for a foot in our homeland.

In the meantime, Somali politicians are engaged in petty politics similar to those engaged during the failure of the state in the 1990s.

Issues remain the same, only actors changed.

In retrospect, we are all responsible for the conditions we find our selves in today, some more than others, of course.

Leadership requires that we swallow our pride and deal with others in a just & fair manner that brings the nation together to unify in the defense of the fate of its future generations.

What is at stake is beyond power & prestige.

It is the future of our existence as a nation.
