I could write a book about #Englishteachers using the #ifyougiveamouseacookie trope; it begins with grading at night, includes snacks, binging a show, a glass of wine, staying up too late, needing coffee in the AM to only end up grading that night. A #NYTbestseller? I think so.
It's a good day when the class must have a rock-paper-scissors battle to decide who first gets to take the #firstchapterFriday book home first

FYI: I have started posting AoWs (article of the week) for the new school year. Go here: https://t.co/A4wYyOYOzT
You have to know stuff to read stuff. Happy new year, all.
Surely I'm not the only one who reads an #autobiography before going to a concert? ๐ค #ELAteacher fun to end summer break! College me is bouncing off the walls to see @LindseyStirling in concert. Also only 1/4 in+it's a conversation=I want to be bffs.

One of my favorite ways to open up a workshop and PD session is with a moment of disequilibrium, which is designed to get people to question if something might need to change.
Here's one of my favorite scenarios I use for a session around grading practices.
#IvelizExplainsItAll A poetic journal, stream of consciousness of a teenage girl struggling with mental health. A read for teens+adults. Some may initially struggle with the narrator Iveliz because she is holding back, but it is realistic and raw.

Itโs only fitting we (@sharingengteach) met at the local library to officially turn our ideas into action steps for launching our #podcast, Bite-Size Literacy. Our goal: to share manageable & applicable ideas related to all things literacy with #teachers & instructional leaders.

All I can say: #DearMartin is a must read. โญ๏ธโญ๏ธโญ๏ธโญ๏ธโญ๏ธ
I'm a little behind on this, but glad I finally picked it up from the #library.

Fantastic development of the #TheGreatGatsby females; I โค๏ธ that they got stories. The timeline aligns with the classic, + I will reread the OG with a new focus. Only one male is likable. Without him, it might have been a tough read. โญ๏ธโญ๏ธโญ๏ธโญ๏ธ

When a teacher is struggling in the classroom, it can be tempting, as a new assistant principal, to jump straight into offering solutions and suggestions.
But there's one question that, when asked with genuine curiosity and empathy, can be far more powerful:
"What do you think is at the root of this challenge?"
Here's why this question is so impactful:
๐น It positions the teacher as the expert on their own experience and classroom
๐น It invites reflection and self-awareness, rather than defensiveness
๐น It opens the door for collaborative problem-solving, rather than top-down directives
Of course, asking the question is just the beginning. The real magic happens in how you listen to and build on the teacher's response. Some key things to keep in mind:
โช๏ธ Validate their perspective and show empathy for their struggles
โช๏ธ Ask follow-up questions to deepen understanding
โช๏ธ Brainstorm potential solutions together, offering your ideas as suggestions rather than mandates
When teachers feel truly heard and supported, they're far more likely to take ownership of their own growth and make lasting changes in their practice.
