I am so proud to be forming the @ancnewsguild with my colleagues in the @adndotcom newsroom today! We're asking ADN leadership to voluntarily recognize our union, and we're calling for better wages, transparency, and a more sustainable workplace.
We did it! A majority of @adndotcom newsroom staff voted to unionize. The @nlrbgov counted our ballots today via Zoom after receiving a few mail-in ballots.
This makes the ADN the only unionized newsroom in Alaska. Thank you for your support! #ADNunited
@MattTunseth@maaarmstrang@ancnewsguild@adndotcom I appreciate your question, but it would be inappropriate to share anything from confidential convos with my coworkers. Everyone has their own reasons for their decision to join or not, and I respect those decisions.

@MattTunseth@maaarmstrang@ancnewsguild@adndotcom We've lost many talented journalists in the last few years because they could no longer *afford* to work at ADN. That means the paper has to spend more money on hiring, jobs go unfilled, holes in our coverage grow, and we lose reporters who know our community. Not sustainable.
@MattTunseth@maaarmstrang@ancnewsguild@adndotcom@ZachHughesNews “And so a large part of this is to have more transparency in the process and to get a better handle, but we have colleagues who have never had raises, or have had every request for a raise rebuffed for eight years.” https://t.co/A1cPfPvbEs
@MattTunseth@maaarmstrang@ancnewsguild@adndotcom As @ZachHughesNews said “We don’t know what our colleagues make...We don’t know what the profit margins are like at the top. We don’t know if our remuneration is fair from one person to the next, if it’s commensurate with the work we’re doing or with experience. We don’t know."
Today, the Anchorage News Guild learned ADN owner Ryan Binkley has declined our request for voluntary recognition of our union. ADN management has also hired an attorney from Littler Mendelson, a notoriously anti-union law firm.
@ancnewsguild@adndotcom That is why we took a major step today toward forming a union, and why 80% of @adndotcom's newsroom staff publicly supports this movement. To help support us in our effort to gain voluntary recognition, you can sign our petition: https://t.co/bM7XATdUZY
I love my job. I love Alaska. I want to see my colleagues thrive. That’s why I’m joining them to unionize. You can support us here: https://t.co/Xam0WSpsrr #ADNunited
Today, we share the exciting news that our newsroom staff has asked the leadership of the Anchorage Daily News to voluntarily recognize us as the Anchorage News Guild.
The Anchorage ombudsman has referred to the state Office of Special Prosecutions the results of an investigation into the city IT director's involvement in a challenge to Anchorage's April election. https://t.co/bF1G72DTI3
I was attacked yesterday in Anchorage while reporting a story about political sign vandalism. While the attack felt personal in the moment, sadly it is becoming part of a pattern nationally and globally.
