This incident highlights the Chinese government's willingness to use their public vessels to deprive Filipino fishermen of their livelihood in an area where the Philippines has legitimate economic rights. The international community should strongly condemn these illegal and inhumane actions by China.

The Philippine position is clear, principled and in accordance with international law and historical facts. The Philippines has sovereignty over BDM. The BDM’s surrounding waters, beyond the 12-nautical mile radius, are within Philippine Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) measured from Luzon's baseline, per the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).
