Research started of with a bang in Israel! First night of sampling with Drs. Leigh Livne Aviad Scheinin was a success! Using an @eimedical EVO III this gravid dusky shark was tagged with @LotekWireless tech to follow her movements and see where she gives birth!

Linking reproductive state to habitat use and movement is critical to effective management. To do this we connect ultrasound images to reproductive hormones. The female porbeagle in the video was pregnant (gravid) and we are tracking her movements now. Where will she go?

Check out @sharkbrooke grabbing a blood sample from a porbeagle shark in order to evaluate circulating levels of reproductive hormones. We use this information to continue to develop non lethal techniques to study this life history stage in sharks and other fish.

Nothing says Happy Friyeah like a porbeagle release! 13 sharks were double tagged and will collect great habit information for those sharks over the next year. Of particular interest are our 6 pregnant females- we can’t wait to see where they go!

We wrapped up our portion of research with @physioshark this week looking for pregnant blacktip sharks. We’ll be tracking momma sharks to determine habitat use around French Polynesia and where they are giving birth!

Baby porbeagles- otherwise known as “porkchops” so cute! Expedition new England is less than 6 weeks away!! We can’t wait to learn how this little lamnid is using the Gulf of Maine!

Pregnant porbeagle shark update! Check out Watts’ incredible 7 month journey -her most recent locations show her moving inshore to potentially give birth before heading back off shore. These observed movements are the first for this species! So cool!
