Only exploring art that is “beautiful” and “makes you feel good” is like going to the salad bar and pouring dressing on an empty plate. There are lots of other feelings to explore, load that plate up.
I still consider myself to be a hungry newbie to this space looking up to incredible collectors both old and new with admiration and respect. I have so much to learn but step by step, piece by piece - I slowly discover who I am as a collector.
I think if there’s something that I have grown to understand it’s that it’s not WHO you collect that makes the collector, it’s HOW you collect. The difference between the two will also result in WHEN you invest/collect. One path follows for gains, one path leads for the journey and power of the space.
I’ve never been impressed by millions tossed at works by big money folks that step in with cash thinking it buys them the moniker of “Collector”. You’re a buyer in my mind, if that’s all you do, and maybe you have a collection, but to me - ur not necessarily a collector.
I respect the folks who have befriended the artists, folks who have searched high and low, in the dark corners of the space, who have risked less money but with lesser known names. I respect the hawks not the hyenas.
They, to me, are the collectors of this space. The ones that give a chance, the ones that create change through highlighting not just supporting after the market has placed a crown on a name.
To me, that’s the thick collector shit. That’s the journey I am on. I don’t have a ton of money - I am still an in debt failed film school graduate with a fucking passion to give voices a chance and light to those who try. You’re lucky if the shit pops, but ur more lucky to discover a life within this experience, a connection with a vast variety of global outlooks, narratives, friends and stories. That, at the end of the day, is worth the most. That’s cool. That’s the art collector.
Caught between the desire to be more active on these newish social media platforms to be ‘early’ and the desire to wait and see which ones everyone eventually flocks to so I’m not wasting my time on a doomed platform 😩
WTF I knew I was gonna be on the front page of @ourzora with my drop, but I didn't know they were gonna put me right next to @Grimezsz - I'm literally freaking out rn seeing them next to each other.
TYSM @zak_krevitt for the love <3 <3 <3
