I came in with a Samsung and iPhone XS mas. First when I came to Ireland I noticed that my sim was not compatible with the iPhone. Thankfully it was compatible with the Samsung. I put the sim in the Samsung and started hotspot the iPhone because….

When I was preparing to move to 🇨🇦Canada, I had already made up my mind that I would not start doing “soft life” immediately. I told myself, “Oga, calm down. Manage your money first.”

So before we even relocated, I bought my humble Nokia C22 Android phone. My plan was simple: use this phone for at least one year in Canada before thinking of upgrading or financing another phone. After all, phone na phone. As long as it calls and browses, wetin concern me? 😂

While researching before moving, plenty people kept saying: “Bring an iPhone.” “Bring Samsung.” “Bring Google Pixel.” “Some African phones no dey work well abroad.” But one rare comment said Nokia works fine in Canada. As a loyal Nokia lover from way back, I said perfect. Problem solved.

Fast forward after landing. I was proudly using my Nokia C22 while my spouse came with a correct Samsung flagship phone 😭My own mindset was:
“No unnecessary spending until income starts entering.”

Then, Canada telecom companies started their own gentle bullying.

First message:
“Your device may soon become incompatible with our network.” I ignored them.

Second message:
“Your phone may downgrade to 3G soon. Calls and texts may delay.” I still ignored them. Data was working. I said leave me alone abeg 😭

Then the final boss message entered. They sent an email to our family account saying: “We have detected an incompatible device on this account. From November, extra charges may apply if you continue using this phone.” Ah!.

At that point, I knew: The system had finally defeated my “apian way” survival strategy 😭😂
Luckily, around that same time, I had already gotten a job offer. So I just carried myself quietly to the phone store and signed up for a financed 2025 phone spread across two years. A, 2025, Pixel 10 Pro-XL, because of my photography hobby, I had used a used 2nd-generation Pixel that a friend sent me from Denmark in 2022, at a time I struggled to even buy a phone.

That was when it fully hit me: Once you enter this system, whether na phone, credit score, insurance, internet, taxes, subscriptions… everything slowly pulls you in 😅You may think you are dodging the system.
The system is patiently waiting for you 😂

The bus app for top ups and other apps were not compatible with the Samsung so those apps were functional in the iPhone. I went to work one of the days and rain beat me shege and the iPhone got damaged. Me that has planned to use the phone for like another one year.. Ah e pain me
