Rebels have been killing and displacing people from their homes in Eastern DR Congo. Sexual assault is also widespread.

The violence has been linked to conflict minerals.

Peaceful Khoza, 3, lifeless body was exhumed from a shallow grave in Pienaar, outside Mbombela in Mpumalanga on 4 July 2024. She went missing the day before, 3 July 2024. Peaceful's exhumation came just a day after the body of Junior Mabandla, 6, was discovered buried in someone else's grave at the local cemetery in Pienaar. It is alleged that Peaceful's little body was partially burnt. The suspect, 18, who is alleged to have murdered both children, Peaceful and Junior, was arrested on 3 July 2024. The suspect is allegedly a close friend of Peaceful's family. We are heartbroken over the loss of such a beautiful little soul. Fly high, little Sister. #womenforchange #sayhername

Uluntu Stuurman, 22, headless body was discovered in the mountain near Tsengiwe village in Cala, Eastern Cape, on 15 May 2024. It is alleged that Uluntu had fled to her relatives home, telling her family that she was scared of her ex-boyfriend. The ex-boyfriend and his friend went to her relatives in Tsengiwe on 14 May to look for her. When the two men found her, they allegedly took her to a nearby mountain, where the boyfriend allegedly stabbed her to death and beheaded her.

Uluntu’s headless body was discovered by a shepherd the following day. Her head was only discovered three days later, on 19 May 2024, about 3km from where she was murdered. Police have detained the ex-boyfriend and his friend for questioning in relation to the gruesome murder. We are heartbroken over the loss of such a beautiful soul.
