@htTweets pick of the most interestng reads of th week includes a selection of Mirza Ghalib's couplets by Anisur Rahman, a volume on tracking down the rarest birds in India by @shashankdalvi nd @Indianpittabook + one on the social nd cultural history of Karnataka by @srikarrrrrr
This is a delightful book that chronicles the fascinating stories of seven bird species that have been missing for long from India, but that have been rediscovered in the last three-four decades.
These are the Jerdon's Courser, Forest Owlet, Banasura Laughingthrush, Nicobar Scops Owl, Nicobar Megapode, Mrs.Hume's Pheasant, and Mount Victoria Babax. The Pink-headed Duck, sadly, continues to remain unsighted.
The book ends with a lovely chapter on where the next rare bird or set of birds could be found.
Have started reading this brilliant book on India’s Rarest Birds…edited by @shashankdalvi and Anita Mani. For bird-lovers, this is a veritable treat…Salim Ali must be smiling in heaven… @HT_Ed
It can be pre-ordered here . I’ve read several chapters and it is truly brilliant.

Our new study in Animal Conservation reveals that expanding cashew & rubber plantations in the Western Ghats harm endemic shrub frogs. Skewed sex ratios & altered habitats call for urgent conservation action. 🌿🐸 #Biodiversity#Amphibians#WesternGhats @ontheedge_org
During the COVID-19 lockdown 24-year old Ram Baboo dug ditches under MNREGA. Previously he'd worked as a waiter. But he never lost sight of his goal - to be an athlete. Today he won Asian Games🥉 in the 35km race walk mixed team that allowed 🇮🇳 to equal it's best ever Asiad tally

Our #scorpio#4wheeldrive, our trusty steed, helped conduct fieldwork across India over the last 8 years @NCBS_Bangalore! She had us stuck (and unstuck), drove alongside endangered wildlife, helped find amazing species in the high Himalaya!
What did I do on #WD2023? No panel discussion for me! Did what most women across the world do everyday! Worked hard! Lucky to be in the Terai with @DivyashreeRana studying multispecies connectivity!
19 km and scats galore! Poor network, pics coming soon!
Indian wildlife law changes will restrict/stop research on wild animals, especially birds. Unfortunately, created by several friends & colleagues with different priorities/intent. Led by parliamentary committee @Jairam_Ramesh https://t.co/HDnQSzfKLs
