Putting your portfolio together has always been one of the most daunting tasks for designers.

We had @arjmahesh, Head of Design at @hebbia , on @DoubleDiamondHQ.

He hires designers and he just rebuilt his own portfolio, so he sees both sides of this.

The thing I keep coming back to: the bar for craft has gone up, but the patience for finding it has gone down. He's deciding in seconds. If the work isn't obvious fast, it doesn't matter how deep the case study is.

The part designers will find encouraging: the tools have made it cheap to fix this. Stuck with constrained work from an old job? Redo the one screen that matters most and lead with it. He's never once checked whether a case study was "spec."

our design team shipped a new design system called "Imprint" last year.

it's been a fun challenge tokenizing inset and raised components for both light and dark modes. designers working directly in the codebase makes it so much easier to get this level of detail live in the product.

i was working on a stateful component that would have had close to 200+ variants.

instead of looking at a grid of static mocks in Figma, i created the component with code and built my own tool to simulate every state and interaction
