Nolan Wells’ parents hold a press conference after a grand jury found that their son’s death was consistent with drowning, with no evidence of foul play found after reviewing the case.

“She (the DA) released the information via Facebook. To me, that showed a lack of empathy and a need to get this case done and over with… So my question is, how can a jury come to the conclusion of drowning, despite knowing that there was trauma to his body, and despite hearing many inconsistencies? BREAKING: A Jackson County grand jury has returned a no true bill in the death of 18-year-old #NolanWells, WLOX reports.

That means the grand jury did not find enough evidence to indict anyone in connection with Nolan’s death.

Nolan was found dead in the water off Horn Island on July 6, two days after he traveled to the island with friends for the Fourth of July.

According to the information presented to the grand jury, Nolan stayed behind on the island after his friends left to head back to the mainland. His phone made it back to the mainland without him.

The grand jury heard from 43 witnesses after 132 subpoenas were issued during the investigation.

District Attorney Angel Myers McIlrath said the evidence presented to the grand jury was not enough to establish criminal wrongdoing.

“There is absolutely no evidence to support the allegations that Nolan’s disappearance and death were racially motivated,” McIlrath said.

Both the state medical examiner and an independent forensic pathologist hired by Nolan’s family determined that his cause and manner of death were undetermined.

Drowning is still considered possible, but investigators could not definitively establish that as his cause of death.

Nolan did have bruising to the back of his head, but the injury was determined to be non-fatal. A witness said Nolan had slipped awkwardly from the side of a boat but continued socializing afterward and did not appear seriously injured.

There was no evidence that he suffered fatal physical trauma. Toxicology also did not show cocaine in his system.

The grand jury looked into several allegations and pieces of information that had circulated publicly during the investigation, including claims of a fight involving Nolan, accusations involving his friends and their families, viral photos and questions surrounding the SeaTow call.

According to the court documents, those claims were either determined to be false or did not match the original evidence.

The grand jury also found no criminal conduct by anyone connected to Nolan.

So, after months of questions surrounding Nolan’s death, there is now a legal decision, but not necessarily an answer to every question surrounding his death.

Nolan’s official cause and manner of death remain undetermined, even though there’s no indictment or criminal charges.

According to the court documents, if credible new evidence of foul play comes forward, the investigation could be reopened. #DocketDiva
