Born Free is aware of videos circulating on social media which feature footage of the gorillas housed at the old site of Bristol Zoo Gardens, which closed to the public in 2022.

Although the zoo has confirmed that gorillas remain housed at the old site and under the care of keepers while their new enclosure continues to be constructed at their new ‘Bristol Zoo Project’ site, the videos and the public reaction to them serves to highlight the sad reality facing many wild animals in captivity.

Born Free’s Captivity Research & Policy Manager Chris Lewis said: “The enclosure they are housed in appears to be the same as that when Bristol Zoo was open to the public and is sadly typical of many great apes’ indoor enclosure within a zoo. This highlights the conditions these animals have to endure in captivity and how the needs of such intelligent, sentient beings cannot be met in a zoo environment, whether zoo visitors are present or not.”

Born Free is concerned that individuals are able to access the facility which poses significant risks to the health and safety of the individuals involved, zoo staff and also the remaining animals at the zoo.

Victory for horses in Spain! 🐴💥
Malaga has ended horse-drawn carriage rides for tourists after reaching an agreement with operators - bringing the ban forward from 2035.

This historic move will spare horses from a miserable life of pulling heavy loads through traffic and heat.

Advocates are now urging the city to ensure every one of the 61 horses is retired to a sanctuary or rehomed through a rescue centre.

From Horse Fair Cruelty to Train Terror: Ireland Is Sliding Backwards on Animal Welfare and Public Safety
Even in still images, the reality is impossible to ignore. The scenes captured at this year’s Ballinasloe Horse Fair show frightened animals, children left unsupervised, and a total absence of control or enforcement. What should be a proud celebration of culture has become a disturbing snapshot of cruelty, intimidation and systemic neglect — playing out in the open, with no meaningful response from those in power.

Across the fair, animals were photographed tethered in overcrowded spaces, surrounded by noisy, uncontrolled crowds. Many appear visibly distressed heads pulled tight on ropes, bodies straining, eyes wide. Some were being handled roughly, pushed or dragged through the crowds.
Children stood among them without supervision, some holding ropes or watching as animals were mistreated.

Beyond the Fair
The collapse of oversight does not end at the fair gates. In a chilling reports from several sources, passengers on an Athlone–Dublin train described a “nightmare journey” in the days following the fair.
Groups of young people boarded carrying animals chickens, ducks and a cat and proceeded to torment them openly, spraying aerosols, lighting them, shouting, and intimidating passengers. One woman who intervened was surrounded and threatened. Others sat in silence, petrified to speak up, unsure if help would ever come.
There were no Gardaí. No Irish Rail security. No one in authority to protect passengers or animals. The sense of lawlessness, fear, and impunity was overwhelming.
We Are Going Backwards
These incidents reveal something far deeper than poor behaviour at a fair or on a train. They expose:
•A failure to protect animals from cruelty.
•A failure to protect children from being exposed to, or participating in, abuse.
•A failure to protect the public from intimidation and antisocial behaviour.
•A failure to enforce the law where everyone can see it being broken.

What Must Change - Now
We are calling for bold, structural action, not platitudes:
1.Appointment of a National Animal Welfare Authority, reporting to the Minister for Justice, with powers to coordinate enforcement, policy, and inspection nationally.
2.The Department of Agriculture must step up and treat animal welfare as a serious, national issue — not a box-ticking exercise. Inspections, prosecutions, and policy must reflect the scale of the problem.
3.Establish a Garda-led National Animal Crime Unit, recognising that animal cruelty is often linked with broader patterns of criminality, antisocial behaviour, and organised crime.
4.Demand that everyone in power local authorities, transport operators, enforcement bodies, and political leaders stop turning away. Silence is complicity.
This Is Not Tradition - It’s Neglect
Ireland can no longer pretend these issues are marginal. They are playing out in our public spaces, trains, and towns. They are undermining public trust, public safety, animals are suffering.

Most people don't realize just how incredible pigeons truly are.

These gentle birds aren’t just loyal partners—they're brilliant, complex beings. Tucked inside their beaks are tiny magnetic crystals that act like a natural GPS, helping them navigate thousands of miles with stunning precision. They can also hear frequencies too low for us to detect, read polarized light patterns in the sky, and even see in ultraviolet light, giving them a vibrant view of the world we can't imagine.

Pigeons are also remarkably intelligent. Studies show they can count, recognize their own reflections, understand abstract ideas, and even grasp probability, sometimes outperforming young children. When raising their young, they produce a special milk-like substance in their throats to nourish their chicks. They form lifelong bonds with their mates and use different coos and calls to communicate danger, love, and territory.

History has seen their courage, too. During wartime, a pigeon named Cher Ami delivered a message that saved 194 soldiers—even after losing a leg. Sadly, despite all this, many pigeons were abandoned when we no longer “needed” them, and they stayed close to humans because that's what they knew.

Pigeons are not pests. They are intelligent, emotional, deeply social beings that remember us. It's time we remember them.

I have no sympathy for those injured as a result of exploitation & cruelty to animals

Five people were injured after a bull caused chaos at a festival in Spain. The 90-stone animal, known as Caminante, broke free from the rest of the pack at the famous Running of the Bulls festival in Pamplona.

One victim was gored by a bull horn under his right armpit while a second was launched into the air by Caminante. The fighting bull even turned on one of the ranchers trying to guide it towards pens in the bullring. One participant said: "It was panic out there today. It’s a miracle if only one person ended up getting gored. It could have been into double figures."
