오랜만에 네 생각이 났어
이유도 없이 그냥 문득
퇴근길 버스 창밖 보다가
예전에 같이 걷던 길이 보여서

한때는 매일 연락하던 사이였는데
이젠 안부도 못 묻는 게 신기해
시간이 참 많이 지난 것 같아
네 번호도 이제 기억 안 나더라

HERE IS GROK ON NHTSA AUDIT OF CYBERCAB

NHTSA opened Audit Query **AQ26002** on Tesla Cybercab FMVSS certification the same day Tesla started paid rides in Austin. That is the real story—not a crash probe, and not a recall.

Tesla told the agency the Cybercabs comply with all *applicable* Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards. The vehicles have no permanently attached steering wheel, brake pedal, accelerator, or conventional mirrors.

NHTSA is reviewing the process and technical data behind that certification, including how much of it rests on Tesla deciding certain FMVSS simply do not apply. The query covers an estimated 1,000 vehicles; Texas records showed only about 45 Cybercabs registered at launch, plus a larger Tesla AV fleet.

**Why it matters**

U.S. automakers self-certify. They do not get pre-approval. NHTSA can later audit that claim. Tesla is trying to scale a purpose-built robotaxi *without* the usual exemption (and the ~2,500-vehicle annual cap that often comes with it). That is the strategy NHTSA is now testing.

The closest precedent is Zoox. Zoox also self-certified a control-free robotaxi. NHTSA opened the same kind of audit, inspected vehicles, found apparent noncompliances with several FMVSS, and later closed the query only after Zoox took an exemption and dropped public “fully compliant” claims. Tesla is now in that same regulatory posture, but with commercial passenger service already started.

The timing is awkward for Tesla’s legal theory.

In June 2026 NHTSA *proposed* amending FMVSS 135 so ADS-only vehicles would not need a manual brake pedal. That rulemaking had not become final when Cybercab went commercial. Other control-related standards (steering, mirrors, etc.) are in a similar modernization process.

Launching on a self-certification that some current rules are “inapplicable,” while the rewrite is still pending, is exactly what this audit is for.

**Practical significance**

- Near term: Tesla can keep running the small Austin fleet unless NHTSA takes a further step. An AQ is information-gathering, not an automatic stop-sale.

- Medium term: NHTSA can demand documents, inspect vehicles, disagree with Tesla’s inapplicability theory, or push Tesla onto an exemption path—the outcome that capped and constrained Zoox.

- Strategic: this is the first serious federal test of a high-volume, no-controls robotaxi sold as already legal.

If Tesla’s reading holds, the exemption/cap model weakens. If it does not, Cybercab scale-up slows until rules or an exemption catch up. - Political/regulatory signal: even under an AV-friendly rewrite agenda, NHTSA is not treating Tesla’s self-certification as self-executing on day one of paid service.

Bottom line: the audit is NHTSA asserting that “we certified it, some old rules don’t apply” is not the last word when a production robotaxi with no human controls starts carrying paying riders. It is the expected first federal check on that bet, not proof the vehicle is unsafe—and not proof Tesla wins the legal argument either.

FSD handled everything perfectly. Cybercab is by far my favorite robotaxi experience. It's really comfortable. The 22-inch screen really makes watching content so much better.

BREAKING: Tesla has officially started offering Cybercab rides to the public.

I’ve been waiting years to say that!

I took one of the world's first public rides. The cabin is comfortable and spacious, the suspension is soft, and FSD is VERY smooth. It’s an incredible vehicle. The screen is HUGE. The video doesn’t do it justice.

We can ride in the Cybercab anywhere in Tesla’s Austin service area, so the same areas as the Model Y Robotaxi.

The Cybercab lives up to the hype. It will transform travel.
