Once again, she finds time to attend other community events including dancing with drag queens but has no time for our community. Her absence speaks volumes. She doesn’t stand with Toronto’s Jewish community or Israel. Toronto Jews deserve a mayor who shows up for them. After 20 years, I returned to Ottawa — this time with my wife and 8-year-old.

We cycled along the canal, explored world-class museums, and visited Parliament. But sadly, we didn’t leave with pride in our capital.

We left unsettled.

Across from Parliament, two homeless men fought in broad daylight. The homeless slept the day away under the underpass across from Parliament or listened to blaring music across from Byward market. Just steps from the Château Laurier, a man appeared to be possibly overdosing. An obese man sat half-naked and unmoving on a bench near the Rideau Centre for two days — no one seemed to notice.

Early Sunday downtown felt hollow. The streets were nearly empty, aside from those still recovering from the night before. The homeless and possibly drugged.

Then we visited Montreal.

There were signs of homelessness near the port — but its downtown was cleaner, more vibrant, and largely free of the distress we saw in Ottawa.

In Ottawa, some stare but more just ignore as if it’s all become normal.

It’s not.

Homelessness and addiction are complex. But when the heart of our capital feels like a place we can’t be proud of, something is deeply wrong.

Our politicians need to do better. We owe it to ourselves — and our kids — to expect better.
