Secret of the DTC Universe #9: Don’t strangle your golden goose
This one is deceptively simple…
And the best way to teach it to you is through an example.
Two days ago I was talking with a young guy who’s just getting into the world of eCom.
I didn’t know him, but we had a mutual friend who connected us…
So I hopped on a call to help him out.
We started chatting and he shared how he’d launched his eCom brand a few months ago…
Scaled it to $130k revenue in his third month at a $30 average CAC…
Then realized he was going to run out of inventory and had to severely throttle traffic until more came in.
That was his current state…
And the reason the guy wanted to talk to me…
Was to get my opinion on his copy, ads, and funnels.
He showed me his main PDP and the two advertorials he’d been running to…
And then he asked me several questions like:
*Is there anything I would change with the copy?
*What about the offer structure?
*What about the unique mechanism?
*Should he be trying other types of ads?
Stuff like that…
And I’m pretty sure he was surprised by my answer to those questions…
Which was this:
“Yeah, I wouldn’t change anything.”
In other words, I told him to do nothing…
And if you’re wondering why that was my advice…
Here’s the rationale:
The funnel and the ads were already working.
He launched and had success out the gate…
He was acquiring new customers at a 2.5x ROAS…
And the only thing that slowed him down was the fact that he ran out of inventory.
Given that…
What possible reason would there be to change up the headline, or the funnel, or to create new advertorials, or to try and test a bunch of different ad formats, or to AOVMaxx, or really do anything at all?
There isn’t one…
And so him changing up stuff would just increase the likelihood that he strangles his golden goose before it’s had a chance to lay its metallic little eggs.
It’s not worth it…
And yet, while this sounds so simple when I write it out…
It’s often much harder to do nothing than to do something.
You feel like you’re wasting time…
You worry that you’re blowing your opportunity…
Maybe you even feel some level of guilt - like you’re not working hard enough…
And that guilt feeds into some deep-seated insecurity or self-doubt about whether you are good enough, or whether you “deserve” to succeed.
Or, maybe it’s not that deep…
You just love to tinker.
If that’s you…
If you’re a chronic tinkerer…
Then, like, that’s fine…
But you just need to accept that you’d rather tinker than get rich.
Make sense?
You don’t get a golden goose very often.
But when you do…
Don’t choke it…
Let it fly.

P.S. Obviously this connects to Secret #8 that I shared recently.
Which was about finding the simplest path to test and scale a new offer.
It’s the exact same situation here.
I’m not saying this guy will never need to test new ad formats, or new funnel assets, or anything like that.
What I am saying is this:
He doesn’t need to do any of that right now.
Currently, all he has to do is get more inventory and get back to scaling ads.
At some point, while he’s doing that, he’ll hit some kind of wall.
Maybe CACs go up.
Maybe his margins go down.
Maybe his conversion rate plummets.
Maybe the CTR on the ads goes to hell, while the CPMs and CPCs go up.
Advertising is entropy.
Nothing gold can stay.
The time for tinkering and testing will come.
That’s the game…
But the mistake is trying to make your next move too soon.
TikTok Shop kids mastered DR without ever hearing the term "direct response."
They just made 1,000 videos and let the algorithm teach them.
Volume is the best copywriting course ever made.
