ON THIS DATE – AUGUST 18, 1893. The Gen. Schuyler Steamer Co. breaks the world record for long distance water throwing at the state fireman’s tournament, at Coney Island. The new world record was established at 234ft 11in and the company won a prize of $325 ($10,700 in 2022).
