Life is short.

Like, really short.

One day, you’re a child, convinced adults have all the answers. The next, you are the adult, Googling “how long do you cook rice?” every single time.

So, here’s the deal: You only live once.

Well, technically, you live every single day (unless you've somehow figured out how to pause adulting… and if so, teach me your ways), but friends, we only get this one, wild, messy, beautiful life.

And so does everyone else.

Which means two things:

Firstly, don’t be afraid. Chase the dream. Eat the cake (or the potatoes). Say yes, take the trip. Buy those shoes IN EVERY COLOUR. Tell people you love, that you love them.

And secondly, don’t be an asshole. The world’s already chaotic enough. Be the person who makes it better, not worse. Smile at strangers, say thank you, and maybe don’t reply to emails with just “noted.” Leave people, places and situations better than you found them.

Oh, and lastly... be brave. Be kind. Laugh loudly. Dance badly. Hug your people. Call your mom. Let yourself be happy. And for the love of all things good in this world, stop waiting for one day… because this day is already happening.

I write to formally place on record a serious and ongoing violation of the constitutional and statutory rights of residents of Laudium and surrounding areas.

The community has now been without water for seven days—five consecutive days, a brief one-day restoration, followed by a renewed interruption since yesterday.

Despite repeated engagements and assurances, no sustainable resolution has been implemented.

Residents have been informed that Rand Water has experienced operational challenges for the third time in the past two weeks.

This is the second prolonged outage since mid-December in Laudium, and the failure to maintain continuity of supply has now reached a level that is unlawful, unreasonable, and constitutionally indefensible.

Constitutional and Legal Framework
1Section 27(1)(b) of the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa guarantees everyone the right to have access to sufficient water.
2Section 27(2) places a positive obligation on the State to take reasonable legislative and other measures, within available resources, to achieve the progressive realisation of this right.
3Section 195 requires public administration to be accountable, responsive, and transparent.
4The Water Services Act, 108 of 1997, obliges water services authorities to ensure efficient, affordable, economical, and sustainable access to water services.
5The Municipal Systems Act, 32 of 2000, imposes a duty on municipalities to provide basic services in a manner that is conducive to the dignity and well-being of communities.

The continued failure to restore water supply particularly after repeated notices, and prior outages constitutes a breach of these constitutional and statutory obligations.

Demand for Immediate Remedial Action:

I therefore formally demand:
1Immediate restoration of water supply to Laudium and surrounding areas;
2Emergency interim measures (including water tankering and prioritisation of high-lying reservoirs) until full restoration is achieved;
3A written explanation detailing:
4. the precise cause of the repeated failures, the steps taken to mitigate the crisis, and the timeline for permanent resolution; and
5. A long-term, sustainable infrastructure solution to prevent recurring outages affecting high-lying areas.

Failure to Act:
I first requested intervention as early as Tuesday last week. It is now Monday, and the situation remains unresolved. This prolonged inaction exposes the City and relevant organs of state to legal, constitutional, and human-rights scrutiny.

Should this matter not be addressed with the urgency it demands, I will have no alternative but to escalate it to the South African Human Rights Commission, the Public Protector, and other appropriate oversight and legal forums, in order to safeguard the rights and dignity of affected residents in my ward.

The community is entitled to dignity, accountability, and lawful governance not continued neglect.

I await your urgent written response and confirmation of immediate remedial measures.
