𝗖𝗮𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗻𝗰𝘆 𝗔𝗽𝗽𝗹𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗻𝘁𝘀:

I want to share some important concerns I have noticed about the expensive Residency Application Preparation Services being marketed to IMGs. Please stay alert for the following red flags:

1) 𝗛𝗼𝘀𝗽𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗥𝗼𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀:
Official hospital rotations are only granted through a hospital’s GME office or Volunteer Department, and these are advertised on the hospital’s official website. If an agency is charging you money for a “hospital rotation,” it is almost certainly unofficial. In most cases they simply have a deal with an attending who keeps you in a clinic and takes you to the hospital only occasionally. Avoid these.

2) 𝗖𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗰 𝗥𝗼𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀:
If an agency is charging a heavy fee for a basic clinic rotation, walk away. It is not worth it. These clinics often give the same generic letter to hundreds of applicants, which makes the LOR practically useless.

3) 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵 𝗖𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗮𝗯𝗼𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻:
If you join a research project, be very clear about your role and your authorship order from day one. Many people will let you do most of the work but push you down to third or fourth author when the paper is finalized.

4) 𝗣𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗖𝗩:
Please do not pay agencies thousands of dollars for PS or CV editing. Create your own content and refine it using Grammarly and AI writing tools. That is exactly what many agencies do behind the scenes anyway.

5) 𝗠𝗼𝗰𝗸 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗶𝗲𝘄𝘀:
Before paying for a mock IV, ask who will actually be interviewing you. Some places charge very high fees, only for you to end up practicing with someone who has never been part of a residency program’s leadership. That offers no real value.

6) 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗺 𝗟𝗶𝘀𝘁 𝗖𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻:
Paying for a “program list” is one of the biggest mistakes. Many agencies simply generate a list of 200 programs without considering your credentials, visa needs, or competitiveness, and they often include programs you are not even eligible for.

7) 𝗚𝘂𝗮𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗲𝗱 𝗠𝗮𝘁𝗰𝗵 𝗖𝗹𝗮𝗶𝗺𝘀:
Any agency that promises you a guaranteed match should be avoided completely. No one can offer that guarantee.
