My WordPress SEO Checklist
My WordPress SEO checklist before I consider a website properly optimized.
I don't just install an SEO plugin and call it SEO.
I check the technical foundation, site structure, content, indexing, on-page elements, and speed.
Here's my checklist.
Indexing & Crawlability
First, I make sure Google can actually access and index the important pages.
I check:
→ Robots.txt
→ XML sitemap
→ Noindex directives
→ Canonicals
→ Crawl errors
→ Google Search Console
There's no point optimizing a page Google can't properly access.
Site Structure
I want the website to make sense to both users and search engines.
I check:
→ URL structure
→ Categories
→ Navigation
→ Internal linking
→ Breadcrumbs
→ Orphan pages
Important pages shouldn't be buried with no internal links pointing to them.
WordPress Technical Setup
WordPress gives you a lot of flexibility, but plugins and settings can also create SEO problems.
I check:
→ Permalinks
→ Duplicate URLs
→ Categories and tags
→ Attachment pages
→ Plugin-generated pages
→ Redirects
→ Canonical settings
Speed & Core Web Vitals
A website doesn't need to score 100/100 on every speed tool. But it should provide a fast, usable experience.
I check:
→ Mobile performance
→ Core Web Vitals
→ Image sizes
→ Caching
→ Unnecessary scripts
→ Plugin bloat
Structured Data
Where relevant, I implement appropriate Schema Markup.
Depending on the website, that might include:
→ Organization
→ LocalBusiness
→ Product
→ Article
→ Breadcrumb
→ FAQ
The goal is to help search engines better understand the content and entities on the site.
On-Page SEO
Every important page needs a clear purpose and target.
I check:
→ Title tags
→ H1
→ Headings
→ Search intent
→ Keyword relevance
→ Meta descriptions
→ Image alt text
→ Internal links
The goal isn't keyword stuffing. It's making the page's topic and purpose obvious.
Content Quality
I look beyond word count.
I ask:
→ Does this page actually answer the searcher's question?
→ Is the information accurate?
→ Is it useful?
→ Does it provide something better or clearer than what's already ranking?
More words don't automatically mean better SEO.
Final Validation
Before calling the job done, I don't just assume everything works.
I verify. I check important URLs in Google Search Console, test internal links, review the sitemap, inspect redirects, and crawl the site again.
THE TAKEAWAY
Good SEO comes from getting the technical foundation, site structure, content, relevance, and user experience right. Not just installing a WordPress SEO plugin.
Sometimes, a website doesn’t rank because the content is bad.
The real problem can be technical.
I recently checked a website that Google was struggling to crawl properly. Important pages were difficult to find because of issues with the site structure and internal linking.
I checked:
robots.txt
XML sitemap
Internal links
Redirects
HTTP status codes
Canonical tags
Google Search Console
After finding the issues, I cleaned up the internal linking, fixed unnecessary crawl barriers, reviewed redirects and canonicals, resubmitted the sitemap, and requested indexing for important pages.
The lesson is simple:
Before writing more content or building more backlinks, make sure Google can actually crawl and understand your website.
Sometimes, fixing the technical issues can make a bigger difference than publishing another 2,000-word article.

SEO in the mind of a website designer:
«Install an SEO plugin
Insert keyword in the title tag»
SEO as it exists in reality:
«Schema
A/B testing
Core web vitals
Log file analysis
Anchor text ratios
Link diversification
TF: IDF calculations
Server-side rendering
Building topical clusters
Crawl budget optimization
Plus, a long list of other things.»
There's so much more than lay people care for.
Professional SEO is extensive.
Professional SEO is specialized.
SEO results don t happen overnight. They build over time.
Here s a recent 3 month Google Search Console snapshot:
1.32K organic clicks
54K impressions
2.4% CTR
7.2 average position
What stands out to me isn’t just the total traffic. It’s the steady upward trend in both clicks and impressions, especially toward the end of the period.
When I evaluate SEO performance, I look at:
Are impressions growing?
Are more keywords moving to page one?
Is organic traffic becoming more consistent?
Are rankings improving without relying on shortcuts?
SEO isn t about chasing a sudden spike. It’s about building a strong foundation where visibility, rankings, clicks, and traffic improve consistently over time.

Local SEO is not just about ranking higher on Google.
The real goal is to help the right customers find your business when they are ready to call, book or visit.
I have worked with local businesses across many industries, and one thing has become very clear. More traffic does not always mean more customers.
A successful Local SEO strategy brings everything together, including your Google Business Profile, website, citations, reviews, service pages and local authority.
When these areas work together, your business becomes easier to find and easier to trust.
That can lead to more calls, enquiries, bookings and customers.
This is what Local SEO should deliver. Not rankings alone, but meaningful business growth.
If your business is not getting enough results from Google Search or Google Maps, send me a message. I would be happy to review your local presence and identify potential opportunities.

Quick e commerce SEO win:
Check whether you got multiple pages competing for the same keyword
Brand + product term keyword cannibalisation is really common when PLPs, PDPs and informational content all target the same search intent, and it can be affecting your visibility

Everyone asks: How do I rank my website for this keyword?
Sometimes that's the wrong question.
A better question is: What type of page is Google already rewarding for this keyword?
If page one is dominated by Reddit, LinkedIn, YouTube, Medium, forums, or major publishers, forcing your own website into the SERP might be the slower route.
That's where parasite SEO gets interesting.
You're not only optimizing content.
You're optimizing where the content lives.
Would you rather spend six months building authority or publish somewhere that already has it?
My 3 Biggest Takeaways for Local SEO:
1. Keywords in Reviews Matter
Google reads the words your customers use. Encouraging clients to mention specific services in their reviews can help strengthen local relevance.
2. The (Unanswered Question ) Trap
Anyone can ask a question on your Google Business Profile, and anyone can answer it. Businesses should monitor the Q&A section to prevent incorrect information.
3. Treat It Like Social Media
Posting regular updates, offers, and photos on your Google Business Profile shows that your business is active and provides fresh information for customers.
The Lesson:
Local SEO isn’t a “set it and forget it” task. It needs ongoing attention.
SEO is not just about rankings. Its about trust.
Clients understand that SEO takes time, but they still need to know:
What was changed?
What improved?
What didn’t work?
What are we doing next?
Real SEO communication isnt about making every month sound successful
It s about being honest, showing progress explaining setbacks and giving the client a clear next step
Rankings build visibility. Transparency builds long term trust
What matters more to you when hiring an SEO: results, communication, or both?
You will make more money than 99% of eCommerce brands if you follow this SEO playbook
Optimize all your existing collection pages
Create new collections to rank for long tail terms
Optimize top 10 20% of PDP
Build internal links between similar collections
And from blogs to target collections
Buy 5-10 backlinks/mo
SEO isnt just about rankings. It about making progress visible.
Clients often ask Why aren’t we seeing results yet?
And honestly fair question
SEO can take weeks or months before major ranking changes appear
So dont just say Give it time
Show them:
What you fixed
What keywords you re targeting
Whats improving
Whats moving
What you re monitoring
Even a simple screenshot + 3 lines of explanation can build more trust than a long report
SEO becomes much easier to wait for when clients understand what theyre waiting for

Your SEO strategy isnt failing because you need more content
It’s failing because your content has no structure.
Before publishing, build:
A topical map
Pillar pages
Content clusters
Strategic internal links
Stop publishing randomly Start building topical authority
Local SEO is changing
For years, the goal was simple: Where do you rank?
Now there a bigger question
Does AI recommend your business?
AI can turn your reviews, website, business info and online mentions into a recommendation or a warning
Being visible isnt enough anymore
Local SEO is shifting from ranking recommendation.
The businesses that win will be the ones AI can understand verify and trust
