I broadly support the revival of Basant provided that reckless behavior that costs lives can be effectively prevented. I think critics attacking the festival outright as 'backward' or unnecessary are ignoring the obvious social, economic and cultural benefits of recognized, well organized native festivals to cities & countries.
At the same time, it is impossible to deny that PMLN & the Punjab govt is deploying the festival to project an image of political normalcy & economic stability that sadly doesn't really reflect reality. The economic recovery is still a mirage, investment (foreign & domestic) remains stagnant, unemployment is at a 21-year high & extortionary taxes & energy prices are crushing businesses & employees alike. This is while two provinces remain in the throes of emboldened insurgency & the leadership of the country's largest party remains imprisoned & silenced.
It is also not hard to see how many of these problems - from stubbornly-low FDI to non-taxation of entrenched interest groups to political deadlocks in counter-terrorism efforts - are fundamentally linked to perceptions of the ruling setup's unpopularity, illegitimacy and inability to contend with domestic political realities.
Reviving Basant is a welcome step if executed effectively and we should expand popular spaces for cultural expression across this country. But those in power patronizing this festival should remember this can only paper over the cracks in our body politic for so long & can not substitute the need for legitimate representative government that can ensure some bare minimum stability, structural reform and long termist economic decision-making.
@HumailNafees@bentheorder2 So by this argument, should we also accept that female infanticide and the practice of Satti were right? Since these were also relatively common back then? C'mon man. Don't make everything about modernism and conservatism.
