It began with two innocent babies.

In the 1960s in Brooklyn, New York, two babies were sacrificed to research organ transplants. The heart from a three-day-old infant was transplanted into the body of an eighteen-day-old infant. Both died.

To cover their tracks and attempt to justify this human sacrifice, the physicians involved established a committee at Harvard. This committee introduced the term brain death. They conducted no studies on animals or humans and did not clearly establish a reliable way to determine when someone was brain-dead. In fact, only nine subjects were examined, two of whom still had brain waves. This demonstrated that the presence of brain waves was not considered necessary to define life.

Brain death determination marked the beginning of organ transplantation and paved the way for what has become an immoral organ-harvesting industry. This paved the way for harvesting organs from live donors, regardless of their potential to recover from their condition.
