The MAGIC of the SC/ST Act has troubled not only ordinary people but even the police. In this case, an SC/ST Act case was filed against a Deputy Superintendent of Police and a Sub-Inspector. They had to approach the Supreme Court to get relief.

The Supreme Court made it clear that when a public servant is accused of neglecting their duty under Section 4 of the SC/ST Act, an administrative inquiry is required before the court can take cognizance. On this basis, the Supreme Court quashed the proceedings.

While the death of the IIT Bombay student is extremely unfortunate and yet another reminder that these premier institutions need to work on the campus environment and mental health but to sack the professors to end the protests is just a band aid solution to a problem that needs surgery. Also, shifting the blame on the professors who were doing their job of reporting copying during an exam and making it about caste discrimination is a sad outcome.
