The BC Conservatives debated the NDP’s bill to gut freedom of information (Bill 9) and make it harder for British Columbians to access information about their government. We kept going all night until 3 AM, when the NDP “forced closure” to end the debate at 3 AM and force the vote, we were just getting started and had hours more to say. The NDP shut down the debate. A party that wants to hide information from the public shouldn’t surprise anyone when they also silence any opposition. Freedom of information and open debate are the cornerstone of democracy. The NDP is attacking both.
Basically, the NDP thought they'd trick the Conservatives by giving them all night to debate FOI bill, expecting Conservatives would eventually give up. Instead, Conservatives dug in and it was the NDP who gave up, invoking closure at 4am.
I hope NDP MLAs are proud tonight as they dismantle their own party’s FOI legacy.
Here’s Mike Hartcourt in 1991:
“We will bring in a freedom-of-information law, not an access-to-information law. I think that shows the difference between the New Democratic Party and the Social Credit government. They talk about access, and it’s almost a grudging word: we may give ‘access’ to citizens. We believe in freedom of information. It’s your information, the citizens’ information. It’s not our information.”
Carole James in 2008:
“We’ve seen freedom-of-information laws ignored and disdained by this Premier. We see new bureaucracies created with no oversight, little public accountability.”
John Horgan in 2015:
“I think all British Columbians should be concerned when their government hides things from them.”
“The whole point of having access to information is so we can all make reasonable judgments about the effectiveness or ineffectiveness of our political leadership.”
David Eby in 2026:
~shuts down debate to kill FOI at 3:41AM~
The Conservative caucus is doing a marathon session to defend people’s rights. Bill 9 would break the social contract between the government and the governed; this bill must die on the order paper.
The Conservative Caucus of B.C. unequivocally opposes the NDP’s Bill 9, legislation that further restricts the public’s right to access information and weakens government transparency.
This government continues to dodge accountability, shut down scrutiny, and concentrate more power in its own hands.
That is why we introduced a hoist motion to suspend this bill for six months to allow for greater consultation.
If the NDP wants to force this through the Legislature in the dark, we are prepared to debate it through the night and beyond.
We will continue fighting for the people of British Columbia day in and day out.
NEW - @angusreidorg numbers:
- BC Conservatives: 46% (+2)
- BC NDP: 36% (-6)
10pt lead for @Conservative_BC as 55% of BCers polled say @Dave_Eby has done a bad job on balancing reconciliation with private property rights.

This past weekend I had the pleasure of attending the BC Wildlife Federation’s Annual General Meeting.
It was great to see Spruce City Wildlife recognized for their outstanding conservation work in our region. I also enjoyed connecting with @MelArnoldMP and Professor Emeritus Gary Mauser.
The event featured several excellent sessions and the election of a strong new board. However, there was significant concern expressed about Bill 4 and its potential negative impacts on shooting sports, firearms training, and education programs that are vital to conservation and responsible outdoor heritage in British Columbia.
Proud to stand with hunters, anglers, and conservationists who care deeply about our wildlife and traditions.
Kerry-Lynne Findlay is the best candidate to lead the Conservative Party of BC and our province. She has a solid platform and will make a positive difference. None of that matters if you don’t register to vote in the leadership race.

🚨BREAKING🚨
American Tribes using DRIPA/UNDRIP/8.1 Interpretation Act to challenge approvals of major B.C. mining projects.
This is happening on several fronts by several tribes.
From Alaska to the Kootenays.
The NDP government is desperate to keep this under wraps.
➡️Below is an Alaskan Tribe seeking to disrupt the ESKAY CREEK gold mine in the Northwest.
Numerous references to DRIPA and Eby’s 8.1 amendment to the Interpretation Act as leverage to have projects cancelled.
This is now a sovereignty crisis.
We are being duped by the NDP.
DRIPA may tear our province apart by US Tribes who are sophisticated and extremely well funded.
A crisis the NDP is hoping to keep secret.
The NDP’s answer to this crisis is to negotiate for 6 months about an unknown outcome.
In the meantime, court cases pile up, trials will begin.
I can’t believe what I’m witnessing.

This Might END David Eby’s Career.
An EXCLUSIVE Interview with Conservative Party of BC Leadership Candidate Kerry-Lynne Findlay (@KerryLynneFindl).
COMING SOON to my YouTube Channel 👇
@Bzubyk Thanks Brad - as you know I’m a strong believer in good polling construct validity.
The only poll that matters will have its results known on May 30.
NEW - @KerryLynneFindl announces she'd replace DRIPA with a Section 43 constitutional amendment to enshrine private property rights, under agreement w/ Alberta and Saskatchewan called "The Western Alliance."
(it's not clear if she actually has buy-in from these provincial govs)
