With the U.S. Amateur at Merion this week, it’s worth revisiting Chris Patton, the winner of the 1989 U.S. Am at the same site.

Patton was described in a @usga article as having “the build of a lineman and the touch of a master jeweler.”

When he wasn’t riding a tractor on his family farm in South Carolina, he was hitting golf balls across it.

Patton was a self-taught player whose family didn’t have the funds for him to travel to the biggest amateur events.

He only had enough money to play one big tournament in 1989, so he entered the U.S. Am. It was the first USGA championship for the Clemson All-American.

The next year, Patton played alongside defending champion Nick Faldo at the Masters. It had to be quite the pairing, a study in stark contrasts. The debonaire Englishman atop the golf world and the kid from small-town South Carolina with a homemade swing. Patton made the cut and finished T39 to win low-amateur honors.

Patton went on to win once on the @KornFerryTour (in 1993) but never did earn a PGA TOUR card.

He was one of the more unlikely U.S. Amateur champions, but also one of its most memorable.

My opinion: This was the best from the #Jets coach & it wasn't even close ...

"This journey, this climb is about to get hard as fuck. It is. That's the reality of it. There's going to be a ton of adversity along the way. And the crows, like we've talked about, they're going to come pecking.

"They're all talking about how we have to go through this team, this division, this conference, and that quarterback — well, fuck, they have to deal with us to. All the way across the board: I'll take everyone in this room over anybody in football.

"One of my biggest pet peeves I have as a coach is when you're on a team that's not doing very well and the opposing coach whose team is doing well walks up to you at the 50-yard-line and says 'Man, you guys play hard.'

They seem to be embracing their reputation as league's bad boy.
