Yesterday, I had an absolutely horrible experience at Olive & Oill Hillcrest.
I’m someone who is extremely mindful of my surroundings and the people around me. I would never intentionally be rowdy or disruptive because I understand that there are other patrons trying to enjoy themselves too. We were simply sitting, having drinks, chatting and enjoying ourselves, not being a nuisance to anyone. In fact, there wasn’t even an occupied table next to us.
So imagine my surprise when the manager walked up to me and told me that we were being “too noisy.” Hhaibo, kanjani wenja? We are literally here to have drinks, have fun and enjoy ourselves, obviously within reason, not attending a funeral.
Naturally, I took exception to being singled out in that manner.
What made the situation even worse was that later on, another table became occupied and the patrons there were noisy AF, yet they were allowed to carry on without being reprimanded. You can guess their colour.. Meanwhile, we were expected to tone it down despite not disturbing anyone.
I eventually called the manager over and asked him why he had felt the need to reprimand us earlier, but wasn’t doing the same with the other table. He mumbled something in response, and at that point I told him straight up that his behaviour felt racist and discriminatory.
I also reminded him that I’m a frequent patron of the establishment and have never been treated in this manner before. His response? He told me that he didn’t care and that even if I never came back, it wouldn’t matter.
As a paying, regular customer, I expect to be treated with the same respect and consideration as everyone else. If there are rules around noise levels, that’s perfectly understandable but those rules should be applied consistently and fairly to everyone, regardless of who they are.
I left feeling disrespected and disappointed. It’s one thing to be asked to keep the noise down, it’s another to feel that you’ve been singled out and then dismissed when you question the inconsistency.
Needless to say, this experience has completely changed the way I view Olive & Oill Hillcrest. PS I frequent most restaurants in my hood, even bring them business and I’m friends with the owners not racist managers ie Oscars, Black Rabbit even Bel Punto and other fine dining spots like the 9th Avenue & Mist..
Olive Oil Hillcrest, you have lost a client. Zinja
