On October 27, 1982, Prince released 1999, his fifth studio album and his first double LP. He was 24, and he wrote and produced it himself, recording from January to August 1982 at his home studio in Chanhassen, Minnesota, and at Sunset Sound in Hollywood, leaning hard on synthesizers and the Linn LM-1 drum machine.
It was his breakthrough. The album reached No. 9 on the Billboard 200, his first top 10 album, and No. 4 on the R&B albums chart. Little Red Corvette hit No. 6 and Delirious No. 8, while the title track, which first stalled at No. 44, climbed to No. 12 when it was reissued in 1983. The videos for 1999 and Little Red Corvette were among the first by a Black artist to get heavy rotation on MTV. His band wasn't billed yet, but "and the Revolution" is printed backwards on the cover, and on November 11, 1982, they hit the road with The Time and Vanity 6 on the 1999 Tour.
🎸 1999 was later certified four times platinum in the US. Which track from it is your favorite? 🎸
