Some wisdom hits like lightning. Some seeps in slowly. But when I sat with an Ecuadorian shaman deep in an Ayahuasca ceremony, his words shifted my entire perspective.

I have always found it difficult to stay focused on long conversations. My mind drifts, my attention fades. Yet with Salvador , I was captivated for 24 hours. Time seemed to disappear as his voice guided my thoughts to deeper truths.

At one point, he asked me:

What happens when you pour a single bucket of water over a rock?

The answer was obvious; nothing. The rock remains unchanged.

Then he asked:

What if you pour water over the same rock every minute of every day for years?

Eventually, the soft water will wear through solid stone.

That was a real lightbulb moment. The lesson was simple yet profound: consistency can break through what seems immovable. Just as water shapes rock through steady flow, we can achieve the improbable with patience and persistence.

This insight connected so many dots for me.

I believe the human mind is the most powerful force in existence, but also one of the most destructive. And “imaginable” is the right word, because that is the mind’s greatest limitation: it struggles to imagine the full journey when the destination feels far away.

It is like standing at the base of a mountain, trying to see the town beyond it. You cannot. The mountain is in the way. You have to climb first.

Step by step.

Yet, this is where most people get stuck. They stand still, trying to figure out how to reach their goal from the starting point, without realising that the only way forward is movement. Step-by-step progress. Consistent improvement.

This teaching made me realise that you do not need to see the town to reach it you just need to take the next step up the mountain.

That idea has stayed with me ever since. It inspired a whole chapter in my book, where I explore water as a symbol for life’s greatest lessons.

So thank you, Salvador, for a teaching that still guides me today.
