When you buy produce that’s in season, you’re purchasing it at the peak of its supply, when it’s easy to grow and harvest. When there are a lot of fruits and vegetables readily available, the prices are lower!
Back in the day, choices in the produce section of grocery stores were more limited than they are today, and seasonal fruits and veggies were the ONLY options to choose from when planning for meals!
When eating local foods, freshness, flavor, and nutritional content are better preserved. Look for signs in your produce section or shop at produce markets where you can speak directly with the buyers to find out where your food was grown.
When you buy produce that’s out of season, it has to travel from far away. That means fruits and veggies must be picked BEFORE they’re ripe, and products that are chosen may be selected for durability at the expense of flavor.
