ZiG Payments Hit 43% as RBZ Targets Long-Term Capital.
ZiG now accounts for about 43% of transactions across payment platforms, which RBZ Deputy Governor Dr Innocent Matshe says signals growing use and confidence in the local currency.
The RBZ’s next challenge is converting higher transactional use into long-term savings, deposits and investment capital that banks can channel into productive lending.
Matshe said banks are gradually shifting from simple savings mobilisation towards capital formation, although lending has yet to increase proportionately. The loans-to-deposit ratio has declined by around 3–5 percentage points, which the RBZ views as part of the monetary transition.
The key test for ZiG is therefore moving from payments → savings → credit → long-term investment, creating a deeper domestic financial market capable of financing businesses, housing, equipment and economic expansion.

The Chirundu Border Post’s upgrade has reached financial close. This means the financing arrangements are now in place, and work can start.
The contract was awarded to Chirundu Border Consortium, which will mobilise the capital, develop and operate the upgraded border post. SAFAGA International is the project sponsor, while Strategic Partners Group is an investment partner. Standard Bank SA is the lead debt arranger and senior lender.
Among the investors is Glynn Cohen, also an investor in Zimborders, the consortium that rebuilt the Beitbridge Border Post.
In 2024, Cabinet said the project was for US$66.8M, and that it would be implemented under a 20-year concession.
Chirundu, between Zim and Zambia, is a key route for regional trade. The upgrade is meant to replace old infrastructure and cut delays.
A 2025 Business Environment Monitoring Survey put the average time to cross Chirundu at about 15 hours, with customs clearance and vehicle queues accounting for more than 80% of crossing time.

A ruler measures things. If a ruler is re-marked so that a two-metre table reads four metres, the table has not grown. Only the ruler has changed. VFEX just re-marked its ruler, which is the market cap formula: share price × number of shares. The table is Old Mutual.
On 13 August, Old Mutual closed at US$0.8028, with a market cap of US$50.96 million. That was measured on the roughly 65 million shares on the Zimbabwe register. On 14 August, it closed at US$0.8385, with a market cap of US$3.77 billion. That was measured on all 4.498 billion shares issued globally. The price rose 4.45% and the market cap +7 300%. As a result, VFEX's total market cap went from US$4.08 billion to US$7.81 billion in one day, and Old Mutual's re-measurement accounted for US$3.72 billion of that US$3.73 billion jump. Today, VFEX stands at US$8.23 billion, with Old Mutual alone making up US$4.08 billion, or 49.5% of the exchange.
Same company. A price up 12.86% since 13 August, against a market cap up +7,800%. Same shares available to Zimbabwean investors. The market did not grow. The ruler that measure the market did. The reform is fair for showing Old Mutual's true global size. But it adds no investors, no trading and no capital. A larger reported market is not a deeper market.

Sandawana Advances US$700m Lithium Beneficiation Programme
Mutapa Energy Resources is advancing two major lithium processing investments at Sandawana Mine in the Midlands, with combined estimated investment of about US$700 million.
The first is a US$300 million lithium concentrator, targeted for commissioning in November 2027. The facility will process locally mined lithium ore into concentrate, providing the feedstock required for further downstream processing.
The second is an estimated US$400 million lithium sulphate plant. Mutapa expects to have a financing plan in place by December 2026, marking another step towards producing higher-value lithium chemicals locally.
Together, the US$300m concentrator + US$400m sulphate plant represent Sandawana’s transition from raw lithium extraction towards an integrated beneficiation operation and support Zimbabwe’s policy of increasing domestic mineral processing.

ZIMBABWE SEEKS US$115M AFREXIMBANK LOAN TO REVIVE NRZ.
Zimbabwe is negotiating a US$115 million Afreximbank facility to acquire 10 locomotives and 315 wagons and rehabilitate railway infrastructure.
NRZ freight volumes have plunged from about 12 million tonnes in the 1990s to 2 million tonnes in 2025, amid years of underinvestment.
NRZ estimates a US$600 million requirement for a full rolling-stock and network overhaul, making the proposed facility an initial step toward restoring rail capacity as mineral exports expand.
Are some foreign investors still overstating the risks of investing in Zimbabwe?
Two investors that have recently raised capital for large-scale mining projects here think so.
At an investor presentation in New York this week, Caledonia Mining’s VP for Corporate Development Maurice Mason says: “This (risk perception in Zim) is one we think has been overdone and mispriced”.
Earlier this year, Caledonia raised $150m through a bond for its Bilboes project, attracting more than $600m in bids, including strong demand from US institutional investors.
Tharisa is making a similar case.
