Yesterday, @Mical_Raz visited our office to talk about the history of child abuse policies—many that center adoptions and fight parents over poverty. These policies continue to devalue and dehumanize people living in poverty, harming thousands of children and families today.
@DorothyERoberts That is so cool, Professor! When I lived in CT, I went to a public library event all about her. It was so inspiring. I purchased a book about her life too!

In an op-ed in the @theGrio, @shereenEsq & @shantaTrivedi examine how a 50 year old law has failed to prevent child abuse, & instead “traumatizes & disrupts the lives of millions of Americans—disproportionately Black communities and those experiencing poverty.” #BlackHistoryMonth
The Child Abuse Prevention and Treatment Act doesn’t prevent child abuse. Instead it created the apparatus to disproportionately surveil and punish of Black families. @ChildrensRights’ @ShereenEsq and I explain why in @theGrio. https://t.co/USqfBEVZMu
Today marks 50 years of a law designed to protect children from abuse. Mounting evidence shows it has failed. @Mical_Raz in @TIME urges that we "reevaluate the reporting-focused priorities" and focus on "evidence-based policies that support families."
