On 22 August 2025, Michael Sang Correa will face sentencing in Denver, Colorado, after being found guilty of torture and conspiracy to commit torture.

This historic case marks the first-ever U.S. jury conviction for extraterritorial torture. The prosecution is seeking the maximum 120-year sentence.

Sira Danso: A Beacon of Environmental Justice Triumphs with LL.M. in Environmental Law

In the heart of The Gambia, where rising sea levels and unpredictable weather threaten livelihoods, Sira Danso witnessed the profound impacts of climate change on marginalized communities. The devastating floods of 2022, displacing over 7,000 people and affecting 50,000, as reported by the United Nations, ignited her resolve to champion environmental justice through legal advocacy. This passion propelled her to earn a Master of Laws (LL.M.) in Environmental Law, specializing in Energy, Climate, and Natural Resources Law, at the Elisabeth Haub School of Law at Pace University, which is ranked the top Environmental Law program in the U.S. by U.S. News & World Report for five consecutive years.

Sira’s journey began with a Bachelor of Laws from the University of The Gambia, followed by a Barrister-at-Law degree and admission to the Gambian Bar as a Barrister and Solicitor of the Supreme Court. Her professional experience as a Pupil State Counsel at The Gambia’s Ministry of Justice honed her legal acumen. At Pace, she thrived as a student attorney in the Immigration Justice Clinic, providing pro bono legal aid to low-income immigrants in New York, advocating for their rights in complex immigration cases.

Her academic rigor shone through nine impactful research papers tackling corporate accountability, human rights, waste management, and electricity regulation in the U.S. and The Gambia. Her work on renewable energy policies, climate resilience in Banjul, and national waste management reforms has enriched discussions on regulatory reform. Sira also contributed to a groundbreaking project compiling a compendium of Treaties concerning the Lenape people, underscoring her commitment to inclusive environmental governance.

Blending her Gambian roots with global perspectives, Sira is determined to bridge the Global North and South policy gap in climate negotiations. Her vision includes establishing a Climate Litigation and Policy Unit within The Gambia’s Ministry of Justice to craft robust environmental policies, foster African collaboration, and mentor future public interest lawyers. By working with international organizations, governments, and NGOs, Sira aims to build legal frameworks that promote climate resilience, social equity, and sustainable development. Her LL.M. achievement is not just a milestone but a powerful step toward a just and sustainable future for vulnerable communities worldwide.
