His main point is that there's a difference between someone belonging here and someone just passing through.

America was the ONLY home they had ever had, and they had worked, suffered, and fought for it like everyone else.

Now picture a completely different situation: a baby born to two tourists who are in the country for a two-week vacation.

That family still has a home somewhere else, still belongs to another nation, and will go back to it.

Thomas's point is that these two situations are NOTHING ALIKE, even though both babies were technically born on U.S. soil.

The citizenship rule, he argues, was built for the first kind of person, the one who truly belongs, not for the second.

CNN’s Abby Phillip tries to paint Republicans as “heavily anti-immigrant.”

Elizabeth Pipko, the daughter of two immigrants, corrects Abby to her face and adds back the one word she left out.

PHILLIP: “This country… is designed to give citizenship to people who come here.”

PIPKO: “Can I just push back on that slightly? … I’m a daughter of two immigrants. I’m a supporter of immigration when it’s done the legal, correct way. I think immigrants have done an incredible bit of good for our country, including my own family.”

“I don’t think there is an anti-immigrant sentiment. I think it’s an anti-ILLEGAL immigrant sentiment.”

“I would say a good chunk of why Donald Trump got elected is because we have a problem with ILLEGAL immigration. I’d say most Americans actually agree on that.”
