@SciInTheMaking You ask great questions! “Grab Your Scissors and Glue Notebooks”! Not sure if learning sticks …their fingers and desk surfaces sure do!
@natwexler@Doug_Lemov I teach Grade 4/5 and this book has been invaluable! The practices show up in my classroom every day, shaping lesson design and delivery. It’s perfect for upper elementary.
But as @rastokke noted, praising disorganization as a marker of thinking is “the opposite of what we want,” because mathematics is fundamentally about “precision, structure, and clarity.” Amen!
I’ve finally launched my Substack with a piece that reflects a concern I’m no longer willing to soften. Building Sinking Classrooms takes a hard look at Building Thinking Classrooms and the widening gap between instructional popularity and instructional evidence. I believe this trend poses a serious risk to mathematics instruction if left unexamined.
The article draws references the work of three educators I deeply admire:
@rastokke, @MrZachG and, @greg_ashman Their thinking has profoundly shaped my own on BTC.
Thoughtful, serious feedback is welcome.

The vertical whiteboards and "productive buzz" of Building Thinking Classrooms (BTC) are sweeping through schools, but engagement is not achievement. Experts like @rastokke , @MrZachG , and @greg_ashman are sounding the alarm that we are trading mathematical mastery for a classroom aesthetic.
The shift toward "de-fronting" the classroom often ignores Cognitive Load Theory, leaving novice learners to flounder in unproductive struggle while major publishers drive implementation ahead of the scientific evidence. Success breeds engagement, not the other way around. If we want students to love math, we must ensure they are actually competent at it.

@rastokke@AmmarMerhbi@MrZachG Awesome response! It’s your blog and that particular episode with @MrZachG that got me hooked and made so much sense! Your blog is much needed professional learning for teachers, particularly in the area of math!!!
📢 My new CD Howe report is out today! In “Getting Math Instruction Right: Strategies for Improving Achievement in Canada,” I discuss Canada's declining math scores and suggest solutions to reverse the trend. Check it out 👇

and to @SoLInTheWild for sharing the book "The Writing Revolution 2.0" with examples from his classroom. They all have their own podcasts and/or are on lots of podcasts. There's so many more out there. My sources for self-directed professional learning!
We’re reading Pax while using the FASE reading technique from @TeachLikeAChamp’s Guide to the SOR. The appendices offer excellent lesson examples and practical ways to embed fluency practice and knowledge building within lessons. I've created my own.
Grateful for so many powerful voices in education. Thank you to @MrZachG for "Just Tell Them", packed with practical techniques for modelling and building interactive lessons. Thanks to @SciInTheMaking for her blog/Substack posts that hooked me on @GTavernetti book "Teach FAST",
