some of y’all have mistaken your particular corner of fandom for fandom itself
fanfic and fanart are NOT the only way to experience fandom
their popularity on your TL doesn’t make them the backbone of the fandom community
@Usahime_sama@jpjoannaa@hobakkm wow really?? I genuinely can’t even grasp that. for me if the initial summary sounds good or has my favorite ship I’ll give it a shot. I honestly think those people are probably a minority!!
@yu_yinlan because you don’t know whether the person likes your work or not but you’re assuming that they don’t and making it a negative thing when its not inherently. people should be allowed to lurk without being villainized. you could see that hit and be happy someone read your work
@AmaraCJH kudos never meant anything 😭 the hours writers spend on their fics is voluntary, right? this isn’t anyones job its a hobby. so the same works for readers. also no one ever said burden.. im saying its not a requirement and shouldn’t be!
@yu_yinlan well no, you shouldn’t think every person that read your work was grateful and delighted because thats not realistic. some people won’t like your work and thats okay, isn’t it?
@yu_yinlan someone being so invested in a pair of characters, a world, a specific plot, whatever - that they came searching for fanfiction and found me. 2/2
@yu_yinlan also, as someone who wrote on ffnet, seeing that I had a new reader DID make me feel loved. I didn’t need a comment or like, the fact that people were seeking out works in the fandom I loved was proof that they were interested. thats the magical point 1/2
@AmaraCJH@yu_yinlan@iminkain as a reader, I don’t wanna feel pressured into writing comments just to satisfy your ego. accepting that you won’t get a handwritten acknowledgment from every person who reads your work isn’t hard either. “pity kudos” what a massive sense of entitlement.
I’d actually argue the opposite. Fandom doesn’t need fanfic or fanart. It needs the source material. People can build community engaging with the source material, fan works are just a plus. I fear you’ve misunderstood what a fandom is
@_cielciel@QueerWebs@misanderist@jukoist if no one will say it, I will - calling “lurkers” disrespectful is absolutely insane. people are allowed to read and move on, you are not owed jack shit. I honestly can’t even believe someone who engages in fanfiction would type that out.
